On November 28, voting begins in the first stage of Egypt's parliamentary elections. This election is considered by many to be the country’s most important elections in its history, as it is the first free election after the toppling of Hosni Mubarak’s 30-years-rule. But due to violent protests against the ruling military council, the volatile security conditions, the complicated electoral system and confusing political constellations, many Egyptians doubt that the elections will be a critical step towards democracy. more…
Democratic Transition and the Role of Law (in German)
Eight months after the ousting of former president Hosni Mubarak, Egypt faces major challenges during the transitional period. The lack of revolutionary unified leadership, the emergence of new political movements and the political role of the military are worrisome for democratic forces and raises questions whether Egypt will be able to manage the transition to democracy. Interreligious Dialogue and Civil Society (in German)
The attack on a Coptic church in January and the clashes between Salafists and Copts after the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak have shown the problems that Egypt faces in the realm of interreligious relations. Invited by the Synod of the Nile, Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Egypt and the KAS Egypt, representatives of all Christian communities met with Muslim dignitaries and German experts to discuss interreligious relations in Egypt. more…
