On Sunday, the 8th of October, the film „Kabul Transit“ will be shown in the office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Kabul. Reason is the visit of the newly appointed Afghan ambassador to Germany Dr. Maliha Zulfacar. It is a double pleasure to have Her Excellency Dr. Zulfacar as a guest in our office, because she is as well the producer of the tonight shown movie. Already in 2003 she and her co-directors David Edwards and Greg Whitemore, both professors from the Williams College in California, were shooting the first sequences in Kabul, Afghanistan. According to Her Excellency Dr. Zulfacar, “Kabul Transit is about the spirit of the Afghan people, as much as it is about the problems of the city. It is about the black humor and sardonic good sense that keep people attuned to the realities of their lives, even as politicians lay the groundwork for battles yet to come.” This documentary is already the second film the professor of sociology, who has been traveling between California and Afghanistan since 2001 to help with the recreation of Kabul University, has produced. The film „Guftagu: Dialog with an Afghan village“ is documenting Maliha Zulfacars trip with an international delegation of women touring mountain villages in 2000. The newly appointed ambassador grew up in a family of liberal diplomates in Kabul. After finishing school in Afghanistan Dr. Zulfacar studied in America and taught as a professor for social sciences at Kabul University. In 1979 Maliha Zulfacar, together with her husband, flew to Germany where she lived and studied for the next six years. She emigrated to America in 1985, but came back to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban Regime. She then was acting as substitutional Minister for Higher Education in the Afghan Transitional Government. Since this time she has been traveling between California and Kabul. Most of the year she spent in California to teach and discuss the issues of global ethnic conflicts and geopolitics at the California Polytechnic State University. But during her summer holidays she taught social sciences at Kabul University, organized fund-raising for Afghan schools and worked together with the Afghan Ministry of Education.
"Kabul Transit" is the second movie, made by H.E. Dr. Maliha Zulfacar
