Conversation with the press

A working lunch followed with eight German journalists followed at the representation of Baden-Württemberg. The discussion included topics such as the transboundary drug-problems, the threat of cross-border terror networks as well as the current political developments in Afghanistan (corruption) and Pakistan (presidential election campaign).

Delegation visiting the German-South Asian parliamentarian group

Subsequent the delegation arrived at the Bundestag to meet German-South Asian parliamentarian group. The discussion about the upcoming renewal of the German ISAF mandate took up most of the time. The Pakistani delegates pointed to the necessary support of the Pakistani army and police in their fight against Islamic terror.

Delegation paying a visit to the Department of Foreign Affairs

On 19th September 2008 the delegation was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Secretary of State Silberberg as well as the heads of division Koening and Sraga. During the trilateral discussion it was once again pointed out that a trustful relation between Afghanistan and Pakistan was one of the key factors fort he stabilisation of Afghanistan and the developments in the region of South-Asia.

Reception at the Afghan embassy

In the evening of 18th September 2008 a reception was held at the Afghan embassy in honour of the bilateral delegation. Embassodor Dr. Maliha Zulficar pointed out the importance of such a bilateral exchange and welcomed the G8 Afghanistan-Pakistan Initiative as well as the commitment of the KAS.

Delegation at the Ministry of Defense

On 18th September 2008 the delegation also met with admiral Thorsten Kähler, deputy chief of the strategy team, at the Ministry of Defence. The Afghanistan mission was discussed. The Afghan representative Fauzia Kufi hails from a constituency near Kunduz and was therefore able to make interesting contributions regarding the fight against drugs and agitators.

Delegation at the foundation “Wissenschaft und Politik“

Between 2 and 4 p.m. a roundtable-discussion with Ms Dr. Citha Maass at the foundation Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin took place, during which a particular focus was laid on the elections that are going to take place in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010 as well as the development in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Apart from that the newly elected government of Pakistan and the latest US military action in Waziristan were also dwelled on.

Delegation visiting the Federal Chancellery

Later on the delegation met with Mr. Dr. Christoph Heusgen, external and security-political advisor of Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is also the head of the external department of the Federal Chancellery. During the conversation Dr. Heusgen focussed, among others, on the question of the role of India in the region. Afghan politicians could generally imagine an involvement of India, whereas Pakistani representatives could not

Delegation holds a conversation with the external speaker of the CDU/CSU fraction over breakfast

On 18th September 2008 a conversation over breakfast was held with federal minister Eckart von Klaeden in Berlin. The focus was on the German ISAF mandate as well as the general threat of international terrorism. The latest US military operations on Pakistani territory had courted the resentment of some of the Pakistani participants especially and the German position regarding this topic was asked for. New strategies for combating Terrorism were also debated.

Ambassadorial reception at the Pakistani residence

For the evening the Pakistani ambassador, Shaid Kamal, had invited the Afghan-Pakistani delegation of 20 to his residence, to welcome the representatives officially. Towards the end of the evening the Afghan leader of the delegation, Hamid Gailani, thanked the ambassador and praised the hospitality as the right signal at the right time.

Day of the KAS with Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel

In the afternoon of 17th September the Afghan-Pakistani delegation attended the „Day of the KAS“ in Berlin and as from 4 p.m. selected members of the bilateral delegation were invited to the auditorium of the KAS academy, to be present at the inauguration of retired prime minister Prof. Dr. Bernhard Vogel, chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, as well as the speech concerning the “World-oriented foreign policy in a globalised world“ of Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel at 4.15 p.m.
