Security and Stability in Central Asia
Initiatives during the German EU Presidency
The Federal Foreign Office and the George C. Marshall Center hold a three-day conference on "Security and Stability in Central Asia – Initiatives during Germany's EU Council Presidency". The conference is designed to enable high-level government representatives and parliamentarians, mainly from members of NATO's Partnership for Peace initiative, to exchange views and discuss prospects for cooperation with the Central Asian states.
The German EU Council Presidency has been tasked by its European partners to draw up guidelines for enhanced cooperation with the Central Asian states ("EU Strategy on Central Asia") by the middle of this year. Through this intensified political, economic and societal cooperation the EU seeks to support prosperity, security and regional cooperation in the Central Asian states, as well as promoting the rule of law, human rights and democracy. The conference contributed towards this goal and examined the current situation in Central Asia from the security and stability viewpoint. In this connection the focus was on the threats to security in both Central Asia and Europe posed by organized crime, drugs, trafficking in human beings, extremism and illegal immigration.
