Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering receives Doctor Honoris Causa degree of European Humanities University

The chairman of Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, will be awarded a degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from European Humanities University (EHU) on November 17, 2017 in Vilnius (Lithuania).

The Senate of the European Humanities University conferred its Doctor Honoris Causa degree to Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering with decision of June 22, 2017.

EHU Doctor Honoris Causa degree is conferred upon the most prominent scholars, statesmen, public, religious, and political figures to honor their outstanding accomplishments in humanities and social sciences, university education and culture.

During the 25 years of the University’s operations in Minsk and in Vilnius EHU Doctor Honoris Causa degree was awarded to such distinguished figures as Krzysztof Zanussi (Polish film and theatre director, producer and screenwriter), Sergey Averintsev (Soviet and Russian philologist, cultural historian, philosopher and literary critic), Algirdas Brazauskas (former Lithuanian President and Prime Minister), Nikolaus Wyrwoll (German Roman Catholic clergyman), and other prominent persons.

Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering is chairman of Konrad Adenauer Foundation and was the only member of the European Parliament who had continuously served since the first European elections in 1979 until 2014. From 1999 to 2007, he served as the chairman of the EPP-ED Group, and from 2007 to 2009 as the President of the European Parliament. Amongst many European awards Hans-Gert Pöttering received the Grand Cross with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and is Commander of the Légion d‘Honneur.

Being the President of the European Parliament, Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering provided EHU with active political support, helping the university to receive a wider international assistance, including continuous and generous support of the European Union – the largest donor of the EHU. As chairman of Konrad Adenauer Foundation Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering raised awareness about the EHU ensuring assistance towards the university.

Konrad Adenauer Foundation stands as a stakeholder and academic partner for strengthening studies and research at the EHU, conducting a course of German and European politics in German language, supporting activities of the Center for German Studies and publications.
