During the Lazarski University’s 4th international conference on Belarus, ‘Belarus and Belarusians among neighbors: historical perceptions versus political constructs’ (Warsaw, 9-11.12.2011), the proceedings of the previous year’s conference were presented. Belarus: EPP expresses great concerns over the deterioration of democratic and economic situation

Since the post-election crackdown of Belarusian authorities on opposition leaders, the European People’s Party (EPP) has been following closely the situation in Belarus and supporting the democratic opposition and the political prisoners. In this context, the EPP tried to organize working meetings in Belarus but the access to the country has been denied to the EPP members. An EPP delegation led by Corien Wortmann-Kool, EPP & EPP Group Vice President went to Vilnius, Lithuania on 19 and 20 May 2011 in order to meet our observer member parties and partners. more…

Ronald Pofalla: Lukashenka is afraid of the power of freedom

Early May in Vilnius, German Chancellery Chief of Staff and Federal Minister for Special Affairs, Ronald Pofalla, reaffirmed his consistent position on supporting the democratic forces in Belarus. While meeting with representatives of 2010’ presidential candidates, he stated that release of political prisoners in Belarus belongs to the top priorities of Germany and the EU. By events on December 19 and afterwards, Lukashenka has isolated himself and will stay in this isolation. Van Rompuy encourages Europe

800 citizens listen to the first „State of Europe“ address at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin

„Today, Europe’s 500 million citizens have the foundation on which to build a better Europe in the future,” said Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council in the first „State of Europe“ address. Van Rompuy used this address to promote a confident and strong Europe in front of an audience of 800 citizens at the historic Pergamon Museum in Berlin. more…
