90th anniversary

Estonia is celebrating its Independence Day

On 24 February, Independence Day is celebrated in the Republic of Estonia. This is the day that the Independence Manifesto was declared in Tallinn 90 years ago. As the Committee of Elders of the Maapäev, the First Estonian Assembly, issued the Estonian Declaration of Independence first in Pärnu on February 23, 1918, and in Tallinn officially the day after, this year's national celebration of Independence Day takes place on two days and in the two towns of Pärnu and Tallinn. more…

Russia after the Elections

On January 18th, the office of the KAS in Tallinn invited to the conference “Challenges and Realities of the Current EU-Russia Relations. Do the Elections in Russia Change It?”. Under the patronage of the member of the European Parliament Tunne Kelam and in collaboration with Pro Patria, well-known representatives from politics and economy debated on the Duma elections, the relations between the EU and Russia and the upcoming Presidential elections in Russia in March 2008. more…

German-Baltic cultural relations

To mark the first independence of the Baltic States in 1918 as well as the deep relationship to Germany, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania present the German-Baltic "Kulturfrühling". In collaboration with the German embassies, the Baltic States will organize different events and exhibitions themed "Essentia Baltica 2008". Germany was the first country that acknowledged the independence of the Baltic States and started diplomatic relations after the break down of the Soviet Union. more…

Andreas von Below leaves – Andreas Klein is new head of office

Andreas von Below is leaving the Baltic States' office of the KAS in Riga after four years of duty in the region. His successor, Andreas Klein, was heading the Foundation's regional office in Dusseldorf since April 2006, and is having Foreign experience as KAS's country director in Macedonia from 2000 until 2004. From October 8th, 2007, will be in charge for the KAS's projects in the Baltic States. Andreas von Below is leaving to Bulgaria to head the Foundation's office in Sofia.

Baltic Sea Conference in Luebeck on promoting a joint environmental policy

In collaboration with the Hanseatic city of Luebeck, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation inivited to a Baltic Sea Conference from June 7th until 9th, 2007. About 60 representatives from the Baltic Sea Region, a.o. from Poland, the Baltic States and Russia, debated on a joint environmental policy for the region. The conference illustrated the importance of a joint course of action concerning environmental challenges and encouraged the setup for an environment protection network in the Baltics.

MP of the German Bundestag, Georg Wellmann, visits Estonia on the commemoration day of May 8th 1945

Georg Wellmann, member of the German Bundestag and of its Committee for Foreign Affairs, underlined during his visit to Tallinn that the Estonian government brought a reasonable solution to the dispute concerning the bronze soldier. He visited the cemetery for armed forces and praised the new position of the statue. Wellmann critized Russia and said that the incidents at the Estonian Embassy in Moscow are not tolerable. Wellmann’s visit demonstrated the solidarity between Germany and Estonia.

Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Prof. Dr. Bernhard Vogel, in Estonia

From April 22nd until 24th, 2007, the chairman of the KAS, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Vogel, visited Tartu and Tallinn and informed himself on the role of the church in Estonia. Another highlight of his stay was the visit to the University of Tartu and a meeting with its Dean, Tonu Lehtsaar. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Vogel met with the President of Estiona, S.E. Toomas Hendrik Ilves, and representatives of the EPP member party “Union of Isamaa and Res Publica” in Tallinn.

High-ranking politicians from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania at the chancellery in Berlin

From January 17th until 19th, 2007, a high-ranking delegation of politicians from the Baltic States is going to meet the chancellor of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel, in Berlin. The politicians will discuss the upcoming German EU-Presidency and the relations between the European Union and Russia.
