KAS/GMF/Chatham House: Economic Populism - A Transatlantic Perspective

On 30 November 2016 the London office of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), in cooperation with Chatham House and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, organised an expert workshop on the topic of 'Economic Populism - a Transatlantic Perspective'. This workshop was convened for three purposes: first, to further develop analysis of the drivers of populist movements; second, to examine the potential consequences of these developments; and third, to explore the potential changes in economic policy that might be needed to respond to the rise of populism. This report is a summary of a bilateral workshop held by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in November 2016. The focus of the discussion was whether the UK and Germany will align their threat perception and strategic thinking towards Russia, based on their assessments of perceived challenges posed by Russia to European security. Dr Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, last night launched the English language version of his autobiography "United for the Better: My European Way" in London. While in London, Dr Pöttering held a number of political discussions, where he gave his thoughts on the British-German relationship, the current state of British politics, as well as the challenges facing the European Union. more…
