Related to the Heiligendamm Process is the informal GIBSA (Germany, India, Brasil, South Africa) initiative, launched in Berlin in 2007, under the chairmanship of Hanns-Peter Keitel from the Berlin based Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP).

The other key founding partners of this initiative include the Indian based Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) South Africa and the Brazilian based Centre for International Relations (CEBRI). The aims of the GIBSA initiative are to facilitate and enhance mutual learning and to create a platform for sharing of perspectives through continued and enriching dialogues on global political and economic issues.
