Marine resources are the heartline to the global economy as well as for India. The economy of the oceans is an essential part of India’s growth. India’s trajectory is significantly dependent on its dominance in the Indian Ocean region. As the major trade route for energy and non-energy products the focus on ensuring secure seas for the global economy is a primary objective for India. Indian Ocean is also key to maritime trade connecting the Middle East and Africa to South- East Asia and East Asia.

With increasing economic activity in the oceans, the sustainable development and environmental conservation are a major factor that would be critical to understand the emerging debates around oceans. Though International law such as United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) has been in place for decades now, these governance measures are limited amidst current governance and environmental challenges faced by the world.

Maritime security is a critical dimension that requires a consistent effort from all countries sharing the seas to maintain peace and security. While regional disputes on shores are common across the globe, the increasing piracy, smuggling, human trafficking, refugee influx are visible challenges that all countries are facing. Within this context, the resource dialogue would focus on some key concerns and challenges that are being faced by the ocean economy both by India and globally. The dialogue would focus on discussing the trade, geopolitics, development of resources and sustainable development of the marine ecology.
