Lecture Event

Lectures by Prof. Gerd Langguth and Prof. Karl-Rudolf Korte

On 09 May 2012 the KAS Japan Office in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Tomonokai hosted a lecture event at the Tokyo American Club with Prof. Gerd Langguth, University of Bonn, and Prof. Karl-Rudolf Korte, University Duisburg-Essen, on current political and cultural developments in Japan and Germany after the Fukushima accident and with an additional focus on the role of Chancellor Angela Merkel in these issues as well as in German politics, European and international affairs.

Seminar with the Sophia University

Angela Merkel as an international politician / Fukushima - political and cultural consequences

On 09 May 2012 the KAS Japan Office in cooperation with the Sophia University held a seminar on “Angela Merkel as an international politician” and “Fukushima - political and cultural consequences” with presentations by Prof. Gerd Langguth, University of Bonn, and Prof. Karl-Rudolf Korte, University Duisburg-Essen. More than 150 students participated in the seminar and in a vivid discussion posed imposingly well informed questions to the two German professors.

German-Japanese Symposium

Changing Societies

In cooperation with the Japan Foundation, the Waseda University Organization for European Studies and the University of Niigata Prefecture the KAS Japan Office on 08 May 2012 hosted a German-Japanese symposium titled "Changing Societies" on the current social and political changes in Germany and Japan. A main focus was laid on new media, protest movements and possible changes in the political party systems. more…

Deputy Chairperson of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung on a visit to Japan

From 25 until 30 March 2012 the Deputy Chairperson of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung was visiting the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka to participate in various events of the KAS Japan Office. Amongst others, Prof. Beate Neuss gave presentations on the current and future developments in European integration with special regard to the German role and on the prerequisite of a foreign policy guided by interests and values and opened a regional workshop on the process of integration in Asia.

Japan's former Prime Minister regards Germany's energy policy as a model for Japan and the world

On 9 March Jörg Wolff, KAS Resident Representative in Japan, was invited to a political briefing at the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) headquarters. On occasion of the first anniversary of the threefold catastrophe the then Prime Minister Naoto Kan informed in detail about the events and developments during and after the disaster. In particular, he prominently named Germany's energy policy and the 'energy turnaround' as a model for Japan and the future of an international nuclear policy.

Aging Societies

Students Visiting the KAS Japan Office

On 24 February, a group of 30 students from the University Twente and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster visited the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Tokyo. In a political briefing the Resident Representative gave a short introduction to the KAS activities in Japan and answered questions on domestic and social politics to the group of researchers, who mainly focus on the issue of aging societies.

Addressing Local Conflicts Before They Turn Global

On 21 Feb 2012 the KAS Japan Office in cooperation with the European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held the conference "Addressing Local Conflicts Before They Turn Global". The event was part of the KAS-EJARN project "The Nexus of Security and Development" aiming at a policy recommendation on Japanese-European cooperation in the field of security and development for the upcoming EU Japan Summit. more…

On 12 January 2012 the KAS Japan Office in cooperation with the Keizai Koho Center organized a lecture event with the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group's Foreign Policy Spokesman, Philipp Mißfelder, accompained by young represenatives from German medium-sized family-owned enterprises. The delegation encountered distinguished Japanese resource experts and economists as well as editorial writers of the most important newspapers. more…
