Regional elections in Iraq

On 20th August 2013, for the first time since 2009, regional elections were held in Iraq. They were supposed to take place in 14, according to other sources in 15, of the 18 government districts. However, elections took place in only 12 government districts. (Only available in German.) more…

A Research on Challenges Facing Iraqi Women Obtaining Legal Rights

KAS Amman, Women Empowerment Organization, and the Lebanese American University Beirut organized a regional roundtable on the challenges Iraqi women are facing in the process of obtaining better legal rights. Women’s rights activists, academics from the field of Gender Studies, as well as high ranking judges participated in the workshop to discuss gender discrimination in Iraqi law. “The Impact of Press and Publications Law on the Freedom of Media in Jordan”

The endorsement of a new draft law for Press and Publications was received with a lot of controversial reaction; the supporters of this law explained that it came to regulate the electronic news sites, while the opponents confirmed that it came to impose restrictions on the freedom of expression. Applying Rules of Good Governance

With the increase of poverty and social inequality, the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD), together with public and private charities, is seeking to expand relief services to the people in question. Due to the lack of financial capacity, governance standards, and administrative coordination, MOSD, in cooperation with KAS Amman, organized a one day workshop to improve the organizational framework and management skills of local charities. more…

Parliamentary elections in Jordan - Stagnation or progress?

On January 23 2013, parliamentary elections took place in Jordan.For the first time, the new electoral law that was introduced in 2012 was applied.In accordance with this law a certain number of seats are distributed by proportional representation.With regard to the Arab Spring and the current developments in the region high expectations were placed in these elections.Although the outcome of the elections seems to be a step towards democratization, the political system itself has hardly changed. more…

The Media and its Role in Monitoring the Parliamentary Elections

With regard to the parliamentary elections in Jordan on January 23, 2013, KAS Amman and the First Media Company – Scoopat hosted a workshop entitled “The Media and its Role in Monitoring the Parliamentary Elections” on January 05, 2013. Various representatives of the media as well as high ranking politicians and experts participated in the event. Project Citizenship

KAS Amman and JCCE co-organized series of workshops about citizenship which is an extension of previous training workshops started in 2009, the focus of the project is the implementation of human rights in school curricula by training teachers as well as the employees of the Educational Curriculum department at the Ministry of Education on how to teach concepts of human rights among students in a simple and explicit style. The training workshop will continue during the years 2012,2013 and 2014. more…

Political Systems and the Role of Parliaments in the Emerging Arab Democracies

The onset of the Arab Spring compelled societies in the Middle East to demand their rights for meaningful democracy. Establishing a democracy requires political institutions that are able and willing to fully represent the interests and demands of the people. In light of these developments, KAS Amman and Al-Quds Center jointly organized a regional conference on Oct. 1-2, 2011 to discuss the role political bodies in these states play in achieving democracy and preventing the return of autocracy.
