2018 is an important year for Latvia - 100 ago the Republic of Latvia was declared and the international community of states welcomed another member. Latvian history is closely connected to its European counterpart - Christianization and crusaders, reformation and Luther, the Wasas and Romanovs influenced the region and its inhabitants over the course of centuries. However also the darkest parts of the European History - two World Wars - left its footprints.

The declaration of independence in November 1918 symbolizes a crucial step in the history of Latvia's emancipation, which it successfully defended in the Independence wars. In the first years following the independence Latvia created important prerequisites for a democratic, open, and economically flourishing state. Yet the Great Depression of the 1930s, the perishing democracy, and the two ensuing World Wars which precipitated alternating occupations by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Russia brought the promising developments to a halt. It was not until 50 years later that Latvia regained its independence in 1990 to reinstate its trajectory to freedom, the rule of law and democracy. Today, the country is a member of NATO and the EU and a respected partner in the international community of states.

The book written by German and Latvian researchers entitled "Latvia 1918-2018. A Century of Statehood" retraces the country's development through ups and downs and concomitantly presents insight into German-Latvian relations. In the discussion to honor the country's anniversary we would like to address the history, shared experiences, as well as future perspectives for Germany, Latvia, and Europe with representatives from Academia and Politics.
