Education Materials on European policy in Latvian, Estonian and Russian now available online

The KAS-Regional Office for Baltic States in cooperation with University of Latvia and Jaan Tönissoni Institute developed a book for teachers for Education of European policy. In a practice-oriented workbook methodical and didactical excercises are presented, in order to bring Europe closer to high-school pupils in a creative way. The workbook supported by the EU-Programme "Europe for citizens" is now available in three languages as PDF-file on our homepage. more…

School children competition

Building bridges in Europe

On behalf of the 60 anniversary of the ECSC-Treaty the KAS-Country Programme Baltic States announces Art/Literature competition for 16-20 year old school children and youth with good German skills under the motto "Building bridges in Europe". The competition invites to think about and creatively picture (draw or describe) motives or own experiences being together in Europe. The competition ends on 4th of April 2011. more…

European political education

The Project "Adventure Sphere Europe" goes into a new level

After the presentation of methodological material for teachers on European political education "Adventure Sphere Europe" in Latvian, Estonian and Russian in August 2010 the project comes to its implementation phase: in cooperation with the Latvian project partner, Faculty of Education and Psychology of the University of Latvia and the info.direct-points of the European Commissionin Latvia, the KAS Country Office organizes workshops for teachers from December 2010 to May 2011.

Van Rompuy encourages Europe

Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, has given his first Europe Speech in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. In front of 800 listeners he advertised for strong and self-confident Europe. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung was co-initiator of this speech. more…

Parliamentary Election 2010

Valdis Dombrovskis becomes the Prime Minister of Latvia

With votes of "Unity", "The Union of Green party and Farmers" and "The national Alliance" Valdis Dombrovskis was approved as the Prime Minister from the 10. Saeima. In his first speech the new (old) Head of Government overlooked the main goals of his cabinet for the forthcoming four years. The main focus will be still kept on consolidation of the State budged, reform of health, social and education systems. more…

Parliamentary Election 2010

The First Plenary of the 10. Saeima opened

At 10 a.m. sharp the Speaker of the 9 Saeima, Gundars Daudze, opened the constituent plenary of the new elected Parliament. Afterwards the Latvian President Valids Zatlers congratulated the Members of the 10th Saeima. He also thanked the members of the last Saeima, who had to work under difficult circumstances. The nomination of new government under Valdis Dombrovskis is foreseen for tomorrow.

On October 2, 2010, the citizens of the Republic of Latvia are electing their representatives to the 10th Saeima. Book presentation

Jesus and Caesar: Christianity and Power

Theologian Valdis Tēraudkalns issued, with support of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the first academic dispute of Christianity and political power in Latvian language. After his studies in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Austria Tēraudkalns places with his monography a milestone in Latvian discussion about the spiritual basis of (Christian democratic) politics. The book presentation will take place at the R. Suta and A. Belcova museum in Riga on 15.9.2010. more…
