The Congress of Tautas Party (TP): Comeback of the Patriarch

As expected, the change in the Party Board happened on the 12 congress of Tautas Party. After 13 months as Chairman of TP Mareks Segliņš gave up his position to his successor, two time Prime Minister of Latvia Mr. Andris Šķēle. After seven politically inactive years after his resignment the founding father of TP comes back into the political arena. 650 delegates hope ten months before the parliamentary elections that Šķēle will lead the party to success.

New project

Latvian Minister of Education Tatjana Koke launches project “Adventure Sphere Europe”

On October 2nd, 2009, the EU financed project “Adventure Sphere Europe” was launched at a kick-off conference in Riga. The Latvian Minister of Education, Professor Tatjana Koķe, and Kalle Küttis, the Estonian Deputy Secretary General for General and Vocational Education welcomed the initiative underlining the importance of European political education fostering the understanding and acceptance of the European Union, its institutions, goals and common values among the younger generation.

Disappointing results for the EPP group

Results of the elections for the European Parliament in Latvia

Disappointing was the European Election for the two Latvian parties "Jaunais Laiks" (JL) and "Tautas Partija" (TP)that belong to the EPP Group. JL achieved at least one seat in the European Parliament, whereas TP gained only 2,79 percent of votes. With this result TP won't be represented in the European Parliament.

Local elections in Latvia

About 1,4 million voters were asked to go to the polls in Latvia on the 6th of June 2009. On this day they had to give their vote for Latvian representatives in the European Parliament as well as for the composition of the local governments in 118 districts around the country.

Valdis Dombrovskis chosen Latvia’s new Prime Minister

The Member of the European Parliament, Valdis Dombrovskis, has been chosen the Prime Minister with 67 out of 100 votes. The former Minister of Finance in 2002-2004 should now help Latvia through the hardest economic crisis since gaining independence in 1991 and has already announced further budget cuts. His predecessor Ivars Godmanis had to withdraw from the office after only 14 months.

Valdis Dombrovskis appointed a new Prime Minister

One week after the withdrawal of Ivars Godmanis, the deputy of the European Parliament, Valdis Dombrovskis, has been appointed by President Zatlers to be the next Prime Minister. In his address to the media following the nomination, Dombroviskis announced his intention to build an efficient government. Beforehand he still has to be accepted by the parliament. At the moment a coalition of the New Era, the People’s Party, the Greens and Farmers Union as well as the Civic Union is most probable.
