Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung receives an award for promotion of Social Market Economy

The KAS was awarded for promotion of Social Market Economy in Lithuania. The KAS-Regional Representative for the Baltic States, Andreas Klein, accepted the award from Chairman of the Committee of European Affairs of Seimas, Mr. Česlovas Stankevičius.

New Minister of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania inaugurated

The new Minister of Economy Rimantas Žylius (Homeland Union/Lithuanian Christian Democrates) was inaugurated today. Before becoming Minister of Economy he worked in the team of his antecessor Dainius Kreivys as Vice-Minister of Economy. The new Minister will continue the ongoing reforms. As main priorities in his new position Mr. Žylius named increasement of transparency of public procurement, improvement of investment climate, innovations, export promotion.

Lithuania celebrates the 21st anniversary of its independence

Today, 21 year ago, the Lithuanian Supreme Council/Reconstituent Seimas voted for the Act of Re-establishmen of the Republic of Lithuania. With this Act Lithuania took first steps towards democracy, independency, freedom, legal state as well as European integration. The 11th of March 1990 will be commemorated today with many different events.

Lithuanian Minister of Economy declares his Resignation

On Tuesday, March 8, Lithuanian Minister of Economy Dainius Kreivys declared his resignation. The decision was made after his attestation by the National Ethics Committee. The attestation stated that the minister confused private and public interests while issuing the EU funding to the company co-owned by his mother. Kreivys is already the fifth minister being exchanged in the Cabinet led by PM Andrius Kubilius since the beginning of legislative period.

Local Elections 2011

Social Democrates and Conservatives lead in Lithuanian Local Elections

On February 27, 2.6 Million Lithuanians were invited to elect their local governments. 23 political parties and 519 independent candidates competed for 1526 mandates of municipalities councils. The Homeland Union/Lithuanian Christian Democrats by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius gained 14,5% (249 mandates) and scored worse than at the previous elections in 2007, nevertheless it was the second best score after the Social Democrats Party, which gained 16,6% (328 mandates). more…

Literature Competition for Pupils

Building bridges in Europe

On behalf of the 60 anniversary of the ECSC-Treaty the KAS-Country Programme Baltic States announces Art/Literature competition for 16-20 year old school children and youth with good German skills under the motto "Building bridges in Europe". The competition invites to think about and creatively describe motives or own experiences being together in Europe. The competition ends on 4th of April 2011. more…

20 Years of Independence movements

Lithuania commemorates 20 years of the day of the defenders of freedom

On the 13th of January 1991 Lithuania defended it's freedom from the Sowjet Union. On that day the Sowjet armed forces drove through the streets of Vilnius with the aim to occupate TV-tower, national radio and television as well as to attack the parliamentary building. The invasion had to set a sign that Lithuania's freedom is not approved by the Sowjet Union. 14 citizens gave up their lives in the conflict with the Sowjet army defending the freedom of their homeland. more…

Lithuania excercises the function of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office

On the 1st of January 2011 Lithuania started its duty as the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for the year 2011. Main goals of Lithuanian chairmanship are: strenghthening democracy, combating cross-border thrats to the OSCE-area, strenghthening media-independence and human rights defense, promotion of regional cooperation as well as energy security. One of the main challenges for Lithuanian chairmanship is current situation in Belarus and closure of OSCE-Office in Minsk. more…

Lithuanian Prime-Minister Andrius Kubilius opens Youth Academy

Last Weekend, on the 11-12 December 2010, Prime-Minister Kubilius gave an introductory speech for the participants of our Winter Academy for Young Leaders. The Prime-Minister presented to the participants Strategy 2030 for Lithuania, talked about the current geopolitical situation and future perspectives for our country. The Academy was hosted by the KAS and the Institute for Democratic Politics. more…
