SECOND HALF OF 2012:
New draft media laws on television broadcasting; another on the transparency of state institutions to the mass media; a major conference to discuss such legislation; the censoring of Santa Claus by Uzbek officials; a training course on environmental journalism and continued blocking of the Internet featured in Uzbekistan’s second half of 2012.
In November, more than 40 international and local experts gathered in Samarkand, Uzbekistan to discuss media legislation aimed at creating a more favourable media environment. Main focus was on a draft new media law on television broadcasting and, as a result, further recommendations to improve it were passed. Experts suggested using clearly defined terms and articles in the new law to avoid ambiguity.
Another new law in the pipeline is on the transparency of State institutions to the mass media as an effective legal instrument to exercise the right to access information. Issues relating to digital TV and radio broadcasting and the development of new technologies in this area were also discussed at the conference. The conference recommended concerned governmental institutions should continue pre- and –in-service journalism and training using leading international tools. Read more
