SECOND HALF OF 2012:
The death of a journalist through axe blows to the head; a petition by international journalism organisations calling for an end to violence against journalists; detention of one of the country’s leading critical journalists; the beating of another journalist by illegal loggers and accusations by outside media monitoring agencies of a continued government attack on press freedom, marked the second half of 2012 in Cambodia.
The death of Hang Serei Odom of the Vorakchun Khmer Daily newspaper in September marked criticism of Cambodia’s media climate. Odom had implicated the son of a military commander in the northern Ratanakiri Province in the smuggling of illegal timber in military vehicles. He was found dead in an abandoned vehicle with several axe blows to the head.
In September, another journalist, Ek Sokunthy of Ta Prim newspaper was beaten with a pistol and wooden sticks by illegal loggers, even though, in his own words, Sokunthy told the Phnom Penh Post: ”I didn’t know why they beat me, because I always wrote stories favourable to authorities.” Read more
