Mohamed Bin Salman's Saudi Arabia

On 27 June 2018 MNED together with AJC Transatlantic Institute and The German Marshall Fund organised a panel discussion on the current developments in Saudi Arabia. Hosted by MEP Cristian Dan Preda, prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and former US Assistant Secretary of Defense Hon Mary Beth Long discussed Mohamed Bin Salman´s Saudi Arabia, its reforms, alliances, and regional role. The event gathered many officials from EU institutions and was followed by an interesting debate.

Roundtable Discussion

After Lomé: Prospects for the EU-ACP partnership beyond 2020

The Multinational Development Dialogue of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organized this roundtable debate on 6 June 2018 to follow-up on the decisions made at the ACP-EU Council of ministers meeting in Lomé and their potential implications for EU-ACP cooperation post 2020. Initial remarks were provided by Dr Len Ishmael, Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassies of the Eastern Caribbean States to the European Union and Geert Laporte, Deputy Director at the ECDPM.

European Development Days 2018

WOMEN IN POLITICS

On 5 June 2018 ENoP hosted a panel discussion on women in politics. In the event, held in the European Development Days 2018, experts from Morocco, Benin and Germany offered their recommendations on how to increase women participation and the number of women in decision-making positions. During the event the project "Get Involved! Women empowerment in Morocco and Benin", co-financed by the EU and implemented by a consortium of partners led by KAS, was presented to the development community.

Conference: "Shadows of a radicalized youth: The struggle with Jihadism in the Mediterranean and the EU”

On 29th May the KAS offices from Brussels and Tunis jointly hosted with the Egmont Royal Institute a conference “Shadows of a radicalized youth: The struggle with Jihadism in the Mediterranean and the EU”. The conference’s key note speaker was Mr Gilles de Kerchove, the EU’s Counter-Terrorism Coordinator. He presented current challenges of the EU counter-terrorism cooperation and underlined the need for more cooperation with the MENA region. more…

Bosnia-Herzegovina - The Role of Cities in the EU’s Climate and Energy Policy

From 6-9 May 2018 a delegation of experts from urban administration and a regional NGO from Bosnia-Herzegovina met with representatives of the EU and European experts in the field of green urban development. Our guests attained insights in European strategies on green urban development, including initiatives on sustainable energy generation and supply. They discussed the current political situation with regards to climate policies in their country and the EU`s strategy for the Western Balkan.

EU-JORDAN RELATIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF COUNTER-TERRORISM COORDINATION

From 26.-27.04.2018 the MNED hosted a Delegation from Jordan including high-ranking representatives from politics and think tanks as WANA and NAMA Strategic Intelligence Solutions. The group around Annette Ranko, Head of KAS Jordan Office, met Monika Hohlmeier, MEP and rapporteur of the Special Committee on Terrorism at the European Parliament. They exchanged views on addressing radicalization and violent extremism in Jordan and the EU.

Environmental Challenges as Threat Multiplier in the Middle East and North Africa

On 19 April experts from the Middle East and North Africa discussed environmental challenges in their respective regions in relation to their impact on migration and regional security. To face challenges such as water scarcity, dust storms and environmental deterioration, transboundary water management together with hydro-diplomacy and modern irrigation systems will be as crucial as an intensified engagement on a political level. Good governance remains the basis for effective climate action.

Policy recommendations for EU action in Libya

Hosted by MEP Jaromír Štětina, the EPP´s shadow rapporteur on Libya in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the KAS-EPP briefing on "Prospect of stability in Libya - Policy recommendations for EU action", shed light on the current situation in Libya. Experts discussed the urgency to stabilize Libya and support the enhancement of the humanitarian situation in the country. MEP Brok Elmar called for supporting Libya in its efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis and to stop human trafficking.

On 6 March 2018 Michael Gahler MEP met a delegation of project managers who implement ten of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung´s projects co-financed by the European Union. The dinner discussion addressed challenges associated with the promotion of good governance and the strengthening of the civil society in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Balcans as well as Central and Southeast Asia. more…
