KAS and Myanmar's Lower House of Parliament start Cooperation Talks

Dr. Norbert Eschborn, Authorized Representative of KAS in Myanmar, met with the Deputy Speaker of the Phyithu Hluttaw, U Te Khun Myatt, and the leadership of the Lower House's administration in Nay Pyi Taw in the beginning of June. Both sides have known each other since KAS's successful workshops in political communication for MPs in 2016. On the occasion of their recent meeting they discussed possible future fields of support for the Lower House through KAS.

2017 Scholarships for Journalists

Adenauer Fellowship for Media & Communications in Asia

The Adenauer Fellowship for Media & Communications in Asia awards scholarships for 2017. The program supports journalists and communication professionals from 18 Asian countries in broadening their experience by giving financial grants for post-graduate studies or internships. Applicants should be 35 or younger, they need a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor), at least two years of work experience, good English skills and an (application for an) university place or internship. more…

New Office Premises

KAS Myanmar Moves Office to Hledan Centre in Yangon

After three years of working under sub-optimal conditions the KAS team in Myanmar was delighted to move into new premises with up to date facilities at Hledan Centre in Yangon's Kamayut Township. The Centre is also home to the EU delegation in Myanmar and is located near the Yangon University's campus. The new premises will allow KAS to offer - for the first time in the office's short history - internships as now appropriate workstations are available. more…

Successful Workshop with the Constitutional Tribunal

The regional Rule of Law Programm of KAS for Asia (Singapore) conducted a workshop together with the Constitutional Tribunal of Myanmar on 25-26 November 2016 in Naypyitaw. Support came from Australian constitutional law experts from the University of New South Wales (Sidney). Members of the Tribunal as well as research staff were introduced to the role and functions of Constitutional Courts in comparative perspective. The event served as launch of future role of law projects of KAS in Myanmar. more…

Dialogue of State Government and Parliament with Civil Society

Daw Nang Khin Htwe Myint (left, with Dr. Norbert Eschborn of KAS), Chief Minister of the Karen State, and the Speaker of the State Parliament, U Saw Chit Khin, were contributors on the occasion of a public forum with civil society from Karen State, organized by KAS Myanmar Office and the Bayda Institute. More than 200 participants attended and also critically commented on the accountability reports of both state government and parliament during the first 100 days of their respective terms. more…

Exploratory Talks with Myanmar's Constitutional Tribunal

The Constitutional Tribunal appears like a natural partner for KAS due to the foundation's decades-long experience with rule of law projects in Asia. Therefore, KAS Rule of Law Asia Program Director Gisela Elsner and Dr. Norbert Eschborn, Head of KAS Myanmar office, met with Members of the Tribunal on 18 May 2016 in Naypyitaw.
