In 2009 elections of the National Assembly and the President of Namibia will be held. Elections enable citizens to express their political will. As an expression of political participation elections are the lifeblood of a democracy. By means of free and fair elections, citizens have the opportunity to legitimate their government. The promotion of democracy and democratic values are a central mandate of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation worldwide and in Namibia, where it has been operating since 1984 and has had an office since 1989. Many people do not know their own rights in the context of elections nor do they know about the procedure of elections or the tasks of the National Assembly and the President. In order to promote the knowledge about elections and encourage people to participate, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation developed a calendar for 2009 about the elections. The calendar provides information about how the National Assembly and the President are elected and about their constitutional tasks and duties. The calendar also contains facts about the Electoral Commission, Election Observers, Campaigning, Parties such as rights of Namibian citizens in the context of elections. Appealing cartoons explain how you can vote. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation has printed 15000 copies and distributes free copies through various institutions like the Office of the Ombudsman, the Anti-Corruption-Commission and the Electoral Commission. Interested persons may obtain a free copy at the office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in the Sanlam Center at the 11th floor, 154 Independence Avenue.
