Interview on the Elections in Nigeria

‘Probably the best Elections since the Introduction of Democracy’

"Nigeria successfully conducted marathon elections in April, which went better than the disastrous elections in 2007", says Dr. Klaus Paehler, the resident representative of KAS office in Nigeria, in a radio interview. Evaluation Result now available

Counseling of Parliaments by KAS gets positive Assessment

In 2010, KAS’ policy advice for parliaments in Nigeria was evaluated by Dr. Kuhn from Freie Universitaet Berlin, an independent evaluator. The aim was to have a comparative evaluation of KAS projects at the state and local levels in 10 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. The evaluator rated the projects in Nigeria positively, these include among others the retreats for whole parliaments as well as Town Hall Meetings, in which the Members discuss with their electorates.

Nigeria Postpones Elections

KAS Country Representative Appeals to the Politicians and Citizens: Perform your Democratic Duty!

In the KAS radio programme with national coverage ‘Vision-Nigeria’, Gbenga Aruleba discusses with the representatives of the electoral commission INEC and the NGO-coalition ‘Situation Room’ about the postponed elections. Dr. Paehler, the country representative of KAS, appeals to the politicians and parties: Perform your Duties! Don’t Rig the Elections again! The whole World is watching You and will form an Opinion about You! To the citizens he says: Go and Vote! Don’t be Discouraged!

Vision Nigeria

The Meaning and Development of the Freedom of the Press

Media acts as canal for information between the citizens and the political system. Thereby, media contributes to a substantial part towards controlling politics. Based on this, Dr Bertrand Weth, the Press Attache of the German Embassy, and Verena Fetscher, an intern with KAS, spoke on KAS radio programme ‘Vision-Nigeria’ about the development of media landscape in Germany. Where is Nigeria standing in comparison, and how can the freedom of the press be enhanced?

Cooperation with INEC

KAS Nigeria is cooperating with Nigeria´s Independent National Election Commission (INEC)

The country manager of KAS in Nigeria, Dr. habil. Klaus Pähler, and the chairman of INEC achieved a groundbreaking agreement. INEC is the national authority that is preparing and executing the national elections in 2007 which are extremely important for the future of the country. Both organizations will work closely together to thoroughly prepare the Nigerian citizens for the elections through country wide radio programs. More activities will follow. The national television reported.

Audience with the Emir of Kano

KAS is expanding its activities in Nigeria´s islamic north

Recently the country manager of KAS in Nigeria, Dr. habil. Klaus Pähler, was meeting with His Royal Highness, Dr. Ado Bayero, Emir of Kano, in his palace. He illustrated the latest activities of KAS in the predominantly islamic north of Nigeria to the extraordinarily influental traditional leader. A radio program has already started, the counceling of future assemblymen of the parliament of the state of Kano will follow after their nomination. The emir ensured his full support.
