New Country Director

Ronny Heine takes over the KAS Office Pakistan

On April 10, 2013, the new Resident Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Ronny Heine, has taken over the office in Islamabad from Tinko Weibezahl, who served as interim representative from December 2012. Mr Heine was previously Director of the Educational Centre at Wendgraeben/Germany. The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Dr Cyrill Nunn, who received the new Representative at the embassy, welcomed him to Pakistan and extended his best wishes for the time to come.

KAS Held Training on International Trade Laws

In a globalizing world, international trade laws are becoming increasingly important. As part of its Rule of Law program, the KAS Pakistan Office organized a training on this topic for lawyers and law students in cooperation with the Society for Enforcement of Rule of Law. Around 100 participants attended the seminar which took place on October 20, 2012 in Islamabad. Abdullah Yousuf, former Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue, participated as chief guest.

AFGHANISTAN-PAKISTAN DIALOGUE

Young Leaders present Policy Recommendations to the Public

In the context of a seminar on the future of Afghanistan and Pakistan that took place on October 18, 2012 in Islamabad, young leaders from both countries introduced policy recommendations for the crisis-ridden region to the public. The recommendations had been developed during the “Trilateral Summer School on Regional Integration” which was held in Germany in June 2012. Numerous parliamentarians, members of the civil society, researchers and media representatives participated in the seminar.

Attorney General for Pakistan Participates in Seminar on Terrorism

On September 29, 2012 around 140 law students and lawyers assembled at the Marriott Hotel Islamabad to participate in a seminar on Terrorism and Cyber Terrorism. Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, Mr. Irfan Qadir, Attorney General for Pakistan, stated that the seminar is the need of the hour. “Terrorism stems from lack of respect for each other and it is the antithesis of the concept of live and let live”, he said. He also expressed the need to tame the terrorists effectively and legally.

KAS Held Training on Competition Laws

Around 100 lawyers and law students attended a seminar on Competition Laws in Islamabad on July 7, 2012. The training was organized in cooperation with the Society for Enforcement of Rule of Law. Guest of honor was Ms. Rahat Kaunain Hassan, Chairperson of the Competition Commission of Pakistan. She stressed upon the important role of competition law for the development of the country. Justice (r) Faqueer Muhammad Khokhar, Chairperson Competition Appellate Tribunal, participated as chief guest.

To further strengthen the ties between Kabul, Islamabad, Berlin and Brussels, a conference entitled “EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue: Challenges and Prospects”, was envisaged to be held in Islamabad in January 2012. The project was jointly organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS).
