“RULE OF LAW” PROGRAM
KAS holds Training for Lawyers on Human Trafficking
Around 80 lawyers from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore participated in a seminar on “Human Trafficking Laws in Pakistan” taking place on July 24, 2010. The one-day training was carried out in cooperation with the “Human Trafficking Initiative”. Chief guest was Mr. Justice (Retd.) Rana Bhagwandas, Chairman of the Federal Public Service Commission and former acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The seminar is part of the "Rule of Law" program implemented by KAS.

Parliamentary Group thanks KAS
On June 8, 2010 the members of the German Friendship Group in the Parliament of Pakistan, who had been participating in a delegation to Berlin in the beginning of May, assembled for an evaluation meeting at KAS Islamabad office. The Parliamentarians discussed the achieved results of the delegation’s visit to Germany as well as the next steps. Moreover, they expressed their thanks to the foundation for its engagement. The German Ambassador Dr. Michael Koch also took part in the meeting.

Roundtable on Civil-military Relations in Pakistan
In the history of Pakistan democratic governments were overthrown several times by military rulers. Thus, the relation between the political elite and the military is tense. Together with the Institute of Political Science and the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, the KAS held a roundtable on „Civil and Military Relations in Pakistan: From Confrontation to Co-operation? on May 25, 2010. Fifteen experts from media, military, politics and research participated in the discussion.

Conference Report (Prospects and Challenges in Afghanistan-Pakistan Relations)
Today the report of the conference on Prospects and Challenges in Afghanistan-Pakistan Relations has been launched. The event was organised by the DSS Department, QAU in collaboration with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Pakistan Office, on April 27-28, 2010. The conference report has been prepared by Mr. Ross Masud Husain, who very kindly consented to being the Conference Rapporteur.

KAS Delegation meets the President of the German Bundestag
On May 7, 2010 a meeting of the Parliamentary Group from Pakistan with the President of the German Bundestag, Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, took place. The delegation handed over an official invitation of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Dr. Fehmida Mirza, to Prof. Dr. Lammert. He accepted the invitation and announced to consider a travel date. Thus, after the visit of the Pakistani Prime Minister Gilani to Germany in December, 2009 a certain bilateral reciprocity has originated.

KAS Delegation meets with German Parliamentarians
On May 7, 2010 the Parliamentary Group from Pakistan attended a working breakfast in the German Parliamentary Society with MP Dr. Andreas Schockenhoff, MP Dr. Christian Ruck and MP Roderich Kiesewetter. Focal points of the conversation were the bilateral relations and possibilities of an intensified exchange on the parliamentary level.
BMZ AND POLITICAL FOUNDATIONS
KAS Delegation visits Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development
On May 6, 2010 the Pakistani Parliamentary Group met with Mr. Friedel Eggelmeyer, Head of Department 4, in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Besides the basic areas of interest, the discussion focused on the upcoming visit of Minister Dirk Niebel in Pakistan. It was agreed that the parliamentarians and the Minister would find time to exchange views in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.

Parliamentarians from Pakistan meet MP Dagmar Wöhrl
On May 6, 2010 the KAS delegation from Pakistan met with the members of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development as well as the Chairwoman of the committee, MP Dagmar Wöhrl. Main topic of the conversation was the upcoming working visit of the committee to Pakistan in autumn, 2010. The Pakistani parliamentarians offered to invite the German MPs to their respective constituencies to provide them with a deep and realistic insight into the country.

KAS Delegation meets Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs
On May 6, 2010 the delegates from Pakistan met with MP Ruprecht Polenz, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. The discussion focused mainly on the establishment of a bilateral parliamentary friendship group. Moreover, Senator Siddiqui recommended to develop a German strategy for Pakistan and referred to the already existing strategy for Afghanistan. MNA Sheikh Waqas Akram delivered an impressive speech on the intensification of the bilateral relations on the parliamentary level.
SECURITY DIALOGUE
Parliamentarians from Pakistan visit German Defence Ministry
On May 6, 2010 the KAS delegation visited the Federal Ministry of Defence and met with Parliamentary State Secretary Christian Schmidt (CSU). Besides discussing issues related to security policy, the conversation focused on the upcoming parliamentary elections in the neighbouring country Afghanistan and the international conference taking place in July, 2010 in Kabul.
