AFGHAN-PAKISTANI DIALOGUE 2010

Delegation from Pakistan visits RTA

On February 24, 2010 the delegation met the director and other representatives of Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) and participated in a roundtable, which was broadcasted live. The discussion mainly focused on the role of the media in the news coverage of the neighbouring states. Afterwards the delegation visited the TV station and the broadcasting centre. At a working lunch the participants of the seminar used the opportunity to exchange views with Afghan media representatives.

Delegation from Pakistan visits Presidential Palace

In the afternoon of February 24, 2010 the delegation from Pakistan met with Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, National Security Adviser to the Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in the Presidential Palace. It was the first time that the National Security Adviser received a Pakistani dialogue group. Subjects of the discussion were a common strategy for fighting the Taliban, the special role of Afghanistan in the reconciliation between India and Pakistan as well as the reduction of mutual political mistrust.

Farewell Dinner for Delegation from Pakistan

In the evening of February 24, 2010 a farewell dinner was arranged for the delegation from Pakistan in the Serena Hotel in Kabul. Prof. Dr. Rahman Ashraf, member of the Afghan cabinet, gave a farewell speech and summarized the results of the dialogue seminar. The participants continued with their conversations in a relaxed atmosphere and discussed future confidence-building measures.

Delegation from Pakistan will travel to Kabul

A delegation of Pakistani decission makers will soon travel at invitation of the KAS to Kabul to carry on political conversations. In the foreground stands the Afghan-Pakistani dialogue. Without improved regional cooperation, in particular between Afghanistan and Pakistan, there will be no peace in Afghanistan, Federal Chancellor Merkel sent a reminder in her latest governmental declaration. The dialogue programme takes up this point.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

German Ambassador meets Parliamentary Friendship Group

The German friendship group in the Pakistani parliament met on the 13.01.2010 the German ambassador in Pakistan, Dr. Michael Koch. The group will travel in May, 2010 for the first time at invitation of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung to Germany to exchange views and standpoints with representatives of the German Bundestag and government officials. The group encloses about 30 members and was established on an initiative of the KAS and the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services.

PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN GERMANY

Seminar on the 60/20 Anniversary

On September 27, the elections for the Federal German Bundestag will take place. Moreover, 2009 is the year of important anniversaries of younger German history: 60 years Basic Constitutional Law, 20 years fall of the Berlin Wall and therein included 40 years of German division. Paying to these occasions tribute, the KAS arranged a seminar on the “60-20 anniversary & Elections” for selected 250 decision makers from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pakistan office of the KAS extends warmest congratulations to Partners, colleagues and friends. Pakistan's independence day (Yom-e-Istiqlal)is observed on 14 August, the day on which Pakistan became independent from British rule within then what was known as the British Raj in 1947.
