Gender Trends in Southeast Asia

Women Now, Women in the Future

This symposium, which, supported by KAS, was the first of its kind covering issues on Gender Trends in Southeast Asia was attended by participants from diverse sectors ranging from governmental to profit-based organisations. Guest-of-Honour, Minister of State Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon launched the symposium with a speech. KAS-LOGODEF Conference in Olongapo City

Cities in Search of the Ideal Communities

The 16th Conference of the East and Southeast Asia Network for Better Local Governments, entitled "Cities in Search of the Ideal Communities", organized by KAS and LOGODEF, was held on Nov. 19-21 in the Philippines. Over a dozen experts from various countries in East and Southeast Asia delivered presentations on urban planning in the spirit of new public management. Cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines were analyzed from a comparative perspective. more…

10th EU-East Asia Think-Tank Dialogue

Institutional Development in Regional Organizations

The 10th annual EU-East Asia Think-Tank dialogue with the theme on "Institutional Development in Regional Organizations – Charter Making in the EU and ASEAN" was recently held in Cebu/Philippines. The Dialogue was attended by participants from ASEAN Institutes of strategic and international studies as well as experts from Japan, Korea and China. Furthermore, representatives from various EU think tanks also were participating.

Networking Enlightened and Liberal Muslims in Southeast Asia

A networking workshop on the meaning of liberal Islam and the concept of enlightened Islam was recently held in Singapore among members of the Southeast Asian Muslims for Freedom and Enlightenment (SEAMUS) which is a network of reform-oriented Southeast Asian Muslim organizations dedicated to the promotion of human rights, gender equality, pluralism, peaceful resolution of conflicts and civil society. more…

29th General Assembly of AIPA (ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly)

During the 29th AIPA General Assembly, held form 19 to 24 August in Singapore and on the occasion of the celebration of 2008 as European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with ASEAN countries Mr. Hartmut Nassauer MEP had talks with KAS Singapore concerning the relations between EU and ASEAN and on possible joint activities in 2009. more…

The rise of China

was the main theme of an international workshop jointly organised by East Asian Institute Singapore and KAS Regional Office. The workshop which coincided with the opening days of the Beijing Olympics provided an up-to-date policy analysis of East and Southeast Asian Countries and their multi-faceted security, economic and political relations with China.

22nd Asia Pacific Roundtable

From June 2nd to 5th the 22nd Asia Pacific Roundtable, organised by ISIS-Malaysia and co-funded by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Japanese Embassy, has brought together more than 250 experts from more than 20 countries. During the three-day-conference in Kuala Lumpur, important security issues for the region have been discussed. Malaysia's Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has attended the conference twice. more…
