On his visit to Amman on March 9th, 2010, NATO Secretary General Rasmussen praised the crucial contribution Jordan made to the Mediterranean Dialogue. Thanks to its strategic position in the region Jordan promoted frequent political consultations and practical cooperation to enhance the stability in the Middle East and combating terrorism in Afghanistan. At the beginning of the year the KAS refered, with its report on the depreciation of Jordan in the Freedom House Index, to the country’s dependency on foreign aid. After Jordan was depreciated by the democracy index of freedom house in January 2010, Human Rights Watch followed with another negative report on the Hashemite Kingdom. The human rights organization criticised the withdrawal of nationality arbitrarily from Jordanians of Palestinian origin, who were originally from the West Bank. No clear basis in law exists for this purpose. Jordan is incensed by the report and sees itself as a victim of a campaign. See Jordan Times for further information. (Feb. 10, 2010) »

The dissolution of parliament and the postponement of the re-election causes the depreciation of Jordan in the Freedom of the World Report 2010. Thitherto Jordan was one of the few Arab countries whose political condition was ranked as at least partly free in 2009. Now Jordan finds itself in the masses of `not free` countries in the Near East. Please find the full article in German on our German webpage. (Feb. 1, 2010) »
