Länderbericht Uganda Norduganda: Frieden versus Gerechtigkeit? Während sich das grausame Treiben der Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Richtung Kongo, Südsudan und Zentralafrikanische Republik verlagert hat und in Norduganda ein gewisses Maß an Frieden und Stabilität eingezogen ist, bleibt der eigentliche Konflikt nach wie vor ungelöst. Der seit 1988 andauernde Krieg zwischen der LRA und der ugandischen Regierung unter Museveni konnte bisher weder am Verhandlungstisch noch durch militärische Operationen beendet werden. (9. Event Press-Politicians Dialogue Held in Serena Hotel Kampala The first ever press-politicians dialogue to be held in Uganda brought together 50 participants; it was organised by KAS, November 12. Participants included leaders of major political parties, media owners, managers, editors and leading political reporters. Others were representatives of media regulatory bodies and parliament. In his address, Principal Judge James Ogola challenged the press and politicians to identify possible areas of collaboration for example in investigations. (12. Nov. 2009) »

Event Marking 20 years after Fall of the Berlin Wall At least 100 guests gathered on the evening of Monday 9th at the KAS offices, Kampala in a solemn function to mark 20 years since the Berlin wall came down in Germany. They included politicians from different political parties and members of the civil society particularly from KAS partners. A 25-minutes documentary film about the fall of the wall which was shown at the event captured the emotions of many. (9. Nov. 2009) »

Publication KAS publishes handbook on Key Concepts of Political Pluralism, Democractic Participation and Representation at Local Government Level in Uganda The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung has published a handbook on the key concepts of political pluralism, democratic participation and representation at local government level in Uganda as part of the project: “strengthening civil society, media and local councils’ capacity to promote political pluralism democratic participation and representation at local government level in Uganda”, implemented by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Uganda Media Development Foundation with funding from the European Union (5. Regierung und Königreiche in Uganda - ein konfliktträchtiges Ensemble Sub-Sahara Afrika ist von einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Königreiche und Clans gekennzeichnet. Die Vielfalt an Kulturen, Religionen und Sprachen birgt immer wieder Konfliktpotential – auch für relativ gefestigte Regierungen, wie sie beispielsweise in Uganda unter Präsidenten Yoweri Museveni anzutreffen sind. Mitte September führte ein Streit zwischen dem Präsidenten und dem König von Buganda (Kabaka) zu einer Eskalation, die in gewalttätigen Straßenschlachten mündete. (25. Sep. 2009) »

Public Dialogue Public Dialogue on Corruption and Governance Ugandan former Ethics and Integrity Hon. Maria Matembe decried corruption as a threat to national development and governance in Uganda. She was speaking at Makerere University in a public dialogue organised by the University convocation and KAS, September 24. Inspector General of Government Raphael Baku challenged students to participate actively in fight against corruption. The dialogue was also addressed by Prof. Aoron Mukwaya of the department of Political Science Makerere University. (24. Sep. 2009)

Ölförderung in Uganda – Strategien, Chancen und Risiken Uganda ist auf dem Weg in die Gruppe der Erdöl exportierenden Länder. Die erfolgreichen Explorationen seit 2006 und insbesondere die neueren Ölfunde um den Jahreswechsel 2008/2009 belegen massive Vorkommen qualitativ hochwertigen Öls in der Gegend des Lake Albert im Westen des Landes. Dies wird deutliche Auswirkungen auf die zukünftige wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Landes haben. (3. Sep. 2009) »

Neue Praktikantin für das Büro der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e.V. (KAS) in Kampala Lena Barke ist in Kampala angekommen und wird bei der KAS als neue Praktikantin tätig sein. Bis Januar 2010 wird sie das Büro unterstützen. Nachdem sie ihren Abschluss in Sozialwissenschaften an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin gemacht hat, ist sie nun dabei ihren Master in Friedens- und Konfliktforschung abzuschließen. Viele Aufenthalte und soziale Dienste in Ost- und Westafrika haben ihr Interesse an den politischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhängen in Subsahara-Afrika verstärkt. (28. Aug. 2009)

Grand Public Debate Uganda's Electoral Law and Institutional Framework: Perspectives for the 2011 Elections Justice Joseph Mulenga, Former Judge of the Supreme Court, has urged political parties to enter into a constructive dialogue on necessary electoral reforms. "Can't we at least reach consensus on the system we use?", he asked participants at a grand public debate at Imperial Royale Hotel, adding that "right now it is only on paper". Training Workshops in Arua Civil Society in Northern Uganda confirms commitment to the promotion of democracy and political pluralism KAS Country Representative Peter Girke has commended representatives from civil society in Gulu and Arua districts for their commitment to strengthening political pluralism and democracy at the local level. He was addressing participants of a 3-day training workshop held in Arua as part of the ongoing EU-funded programme. Apart from CSO representatives, local councillors and journalists were also trained in seperate workshops to become succesful promoters of democracy and pluralism in Uganda. (8. Aug. 2009) »
