AZAM was set up in 1983 as a non-profit and non-governmental organisation seeking to facilitate development efforts in Sarawak through the promotion of development communication. It was created to help prepare the people of the State for changes brought about by development and to encourage their active participation in the process. Its current thrust is on community development. The main target groups of AZAM, a voluntary association, are the rural community, the government frontline agents and media practitioners. Its core activities are training-seminars, workshops, courses, lectures, dialogues, forums, communication programmes, publications, and IT awareness and promotion activities. Since its inception AZAM has highlighted numerous developments issues in the areas of rural development, environment, land development, agriculture commercialisation, tourism, education, communications, poverty, youth and women development and more recently, IT and civic education. »

Institute for Policy Research (IPR), Institut Kajian Dasar (IKD)

IPR/IKD was established in 1985 as a non-governmental, non-profit, organisation. IKD's mission is to carry out and promote systematic research relating to political, economic and social development in Malaysia, with special reference to the development of man as the pre requisite to other forms of development. The institute is administered by a board of trustees, a Panel of Consultants and a Management team. A member of the Board of Trustees is appointed to be the Chairman of the institute. The institute is funded mainly by private sources. At present, IKD's focus is on "Civic Education" seminars for the youth - a programme held in collaboration with KAF - and publications.
