The 11th edition of the International Human Rights and Documentary Festival One World Romania 2018 had the official opening on March 16, 2018. The KAS Rule of Law Programme South East Europe is once again the main partner of the festival. Third training session of the Leaders for Justice 2018 programme

The third training session of the Leaders for Justice 9th generation took place in Brasov between March 8-11 and focused on change management, decision-making, real leadership or the exercise of power with trainers Mihai Dragoi and Marian Stas. Also, the planning for change module with Codru Vrabie gave them the opportunity to start working on their common initiatives. The inspiration was brought by Laura Andrei, former President of the Bucharest Tribunal, in a four hours open discussion. more…

How does Romania take back its stolen assets from corrupt convicts?

The Center for Investigative Media launched a policy paper focused on monitoring real examples of how the state actually fails or manages to confiscate assets from corrupt convicted Romanian politicians and businessmen. At the event, the Dutch Ambassador, two members of the Romanian parliament, and experts from DNA, DIICOT, General Prosecutors Office, ANABI, ANAF and Romanian courts spoke. Training for judges in Albania

Justice must be seen to be done

KAS RLPSEE and The European Centre in Albania organized a training for judges on "Independence and impartiality of the Judiciary", which took place on the 20th of October in Tirana. Mr. Idlir Peci, human rights expert, and Prof. Vincent Coussirat-Coustère from France, delivered presentations on ECtHR standards, assisting the judges acquire a better understanding and knowledge of the European standards related to Article 6 of the ECHR. more…

At the opening of the seminar “Ethics in the judiciary of South-East European countries”, organized in cooperation with the Judicial Academy in Zagreb, Mr. Hartmut Rank, director of KAS RLP SEE, welcomed 25 judges from Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Macedonia. H.E. Thomas Schultze, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Croatia, and Dr. Michael Lange, director of the KAS-Bureau in Croatia, emphasized as guest speakers the importance of ethics in the judiciary. more…

The International Criminal Court (ICC) was created in 2002 as an instrument against atrocities “that have outraged the conscience of mankind”. More than 120 states have joined since then. The former MEP and expert on South East Europe, Doris Pack, held a lecture at this year's International Summer School Sarajevo on the topic of “The role of EU conditionality in transformation processes". During the subsequent discussion, which was moderated by Thorsten Geissler, director of the RLP SEE, the former European politician, who has a long-standing expertise about the region, answered numerous questions of the participants of the ISSS 2017.

Opening of the International Summer School Sarajevo 2017

Under the title ”Transitional Justice as a Response to Emerging Challenge in South-East Europe”, the 11th International Summer School Sarajevo opened on July 19 with the speeches of Karsten Dümmel, director of KAS Bosnia and Herzegovina office and of Rifat Skrijelj, the rector of the Sarajevo University. Until July 28, 25 students and graduates will take part in workshops, lectures and study visits to relevant institutions.
