Leaders for Justice

Discussion with Romanian Minister of Justice

On the 4th of October, the alumni of Leaders for Justice had the opportunity to discuss current problems in Romanian judiciary with Justice Minister Raluca Pruna. During the meeting, topics like the financing of the judicial system, a new structure of instances and an increase in personnel as well as the necessity of the EU Cooperation and Verification Mechanism were covered. Furthermore, it was discussed which margin remains for Pruna until the end of her mandate with parliamentary elections.

Introduction to asylum and migration law, training for young lawyers and students

On September 30-October 1, the KAS RLP SEE organized in Macedonia a seminar for 20 young jurists, lawyers and students, on the correct application of the asylum and migration law. The agenda drawn up by our project partner MYLA (Macedonian Young Lawyers Association) focused not only on the relevant national and international legislation, but also on the approval process of an asylum application at the Ministry of Interior and the consequences of such approval or rejection.

Visit to the CDU Headquarter in Berlin

On the 29th of September, the participants of the Leaders for Justice 2016 program visited the headquarters of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). The participants were introduced into the history and organisation of CDU. They also discussed its general impact and importance as a modern people's party. The Role of Magistrates in the Election Process

On 22nd September 2016, a discussion on the role of judges and prosecutors in the election process took place in Bucharest in cooperation with Expert Forum and LiderJust. Together with judges, the Vice-President of the Permanent Electoral Authority and the Prefect of Bucharest, problems and joint solutions, on practical as well as legislative level, were discussed.

10th anniversary of ISSS

ISSS-alumni conference successfully started!

The 3-days conference on the topic “development of mechanisms for coping with the past, 10 years of experience in South East Europe” was opened in Sarajevo at 28th of July. More than 60 alumni of the program from all over the world, largely from South East Europe, are discussing in the following days about transitional justice, human rights and democratisation in and of the region. Participating at the conference, and also moderating, will be former head of RLP SEE, Dr. Stefanie Ricarda Roos.

Summer School

Opening of the International Summer School Sarajevo 2016

Under the patronage of Vice-President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Melika Mahmutbegović, the temporary head of RLP SEE Thorsten Geissler opened the 10th International Summer School on the topic “transitional justice, processes and challenges in South East Europe”. Also in this year, former MEP Doris Pack spoke with the 25 participants of ISSS 2016, inter alia, about the regional policy of the EU in South East Europe and the role of international organisations in the democratisation process.

Workshop Veliko Tarnovo


United Youth for Tolerance - workshop for young Roma in Veliko Tarnovo

In co-operation with European Information Center Bulgaria, the Rule of Law Program South East Europe has organised a workshop for and with young Roma under the title “United Youth for Tolerance” in Veliko Tarnovo from 2nd to 5th of June. The objective of the workshop was the exchange of experience in the integration of young Roma in schools in Bulgaria, Germany, Albania and Romania as well as the interaction between the young themselves.

Leaders for Justice Alumni met with Dean Thompson, Deputy Chief of Mission US Embassy to Romania

On May 17, the Rule of Law Program South East Europe and the Country Office Romania hosted an open discussion between KAS scholars and members of the Leaders for Justice network and Dean Thompson, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the United States of America to Romania. The event focused on several topics such as the consolidation of rule of law and the role of young people in shaping new mentalities within the society.

Eurosfat Forum 2016

The 4th EUROSFAT Forum took place on May 6 in Bucharest. The KAS RLPSEE was one of the partners of the panel dedicated to "The National Anticorrupion Strategy (SNA) - how can we secure the continuity and the sustainability of the reforms?". The Romanian minister of justice, Ms. Raluca Prună opened the panel with a speech focusing on the importance of a succesfull implementation of the new SNA in the light of the possible removal of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Romania.
