Judicial Independence
Also available in Deutsch
For effective compliance with constitutional principles, judicial independence is a necessary condition, because even the best substantive law loses its credibility and effectiveness through corruption in the judiciary. Independence of the judiciary can be weakened both by venality of the courts and by political interference in the judiciary.
The Rule of Law Programme Asia is committed to the establishment of a) an efficient, transparent and independent judiciary, b) the binding of both the executive and the legislative to law and c) the establishment and strengthening of independent monitoring bodies such as anti-corruption authorities. It promotes professionalism and integrity in the exercise of legal professions by educating on existing international and regional standards concerning the ethical conduct of judges and prosecutors and promotes the development and application of such standards at a national level.
Also in this subject area the Rule of Law Programme holds regular conferences for judges and representatives of anti-corruption authorities and creates and promotes research and publications on the subject.
