THE FINLANDIZATION OF UKRAINE

New developments in the relationship between Russia and Ukraine: a challenge for the EU?

The deal struck between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on a new gas contract and a longer lease of a Russian naval base in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol reinvigorates the relationship between the two countries whose past disputes on gas contracts disrupted the energy supply to European countries. Implemented by both the Ukrainian and Russian parliament, the agreement increases Russia’s influence in the former Soviet republic and also implicates a significant shift from a former pro-west oriented Ukraine towards Russia.
