Founded in 1934 the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) has a long and proud record as South Africa’s premier research institute on international issues. It is an independent, non-government think-tank whose purpose is to encourage wider and more informed awareness of the importance of international affairs. It is both a centre for research excellence and a home for stimulating public debate. In 2013 the institute, which is a partner of KAS for many years, has been awarded best think-tank in Sub-Saharan Africa by the „Think Tank und Civil Societies Program“ of the University of Pennsylvania.

The South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law (SAIFAC) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit research institute, operating from historic premises in the Old Fort on Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, in close proximity to the South African Constitutional Court and its library. SAIFAC is a Centre of the University of Johannesburg. It was established in April 2004 under a Deed of Trust registered with the Master of the High Court in Pretoria.
