-KAS/SAIIA Internship: Combining theory with practical experience-

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is a German political foundation named after the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. KAS operates worldwide with the aim to promote democracy through political education and training.

Since 1999 KAS has funded an internship programme, run by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in conjunction with the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). This internship provides talented students (who are South African citizens) with the unique opportunity of enrolling for a Masters degree by course work in International Relations, Political Science or Journalism at Wits, while simoultaneously working at SAIIA.

The successful applicants would have to meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at Wits. Applicants should not be older than 30 years. The duration of the internship is February-December. The scholarship includes a full bursary for the fees at Wits and SAIIA as well as a small monthly stipend.

The programme is output-focused. The interns, who are assigned to mentors, are encouraged to write articles for SAIIA's various publications and the newspapers, allowing them to hone their methodological as well as research and writing skills. Most of the internship graduates have gone on to high-profile and high-powered positions in public and private life.

Annual follow-up workshops for former and current participants of the scholarship programme provide further training, stimulate debate on political or socio-economic issues and ultimately aim to develop a network of expertise in South Africa as well as in the region.

The application should include:

A letter of motivation;
A full CV;
Three written references;
June results and academic transcript of previous degree;
One example of written work not exceeding 3,000 words on a topic of choice.
