Economic Integration and Social Cohesion in ASEAN: Progress and Perspectives
“Economic Integration and Social Cohesion in ASEAN: Progress and Perspectives”, an international seminar organized by KAS in cooperation with Centre for European Studies and Chula Global Network brought together experts from throughout the region to assess ASEAN’s economic and social performance and the policies and mechanism for reducing regional disparities. Dr. Christoph Konrad, Sec. Gen. of the SME-Union of the EPP gave a briefing on the cohesion policy of the EU.
Academic Dialogue
KAS and Institute for Democracy Studies co-organized a roundtable „Visions of Thai Intellectuals: A Sustainable Development in Thailand“, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of 30 outstanding scholars and experts for a dialogue on sustainable democratic and economic development in Thailand. The dialogue has served to assess the responsibility and the contribution of academicians in overcoming the polarization of the Thai society.
Annual Conference on Civil Service
The Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva gave an opening speech at the annual conference on civil service co-organized by KAS and OCSC. In his speech he focused on the importance of ethical standards. The traditional annual conference provides a forum for information on recent developments and guidelines in the administration. Equally, it serves to reviewing the work of the Civil Service Commission as a guiding institution for strengthening ethics, transparency and capabilities in the civil service.
Visit of Judges of the Supreme Administrative Court to Germany
Upon the invitation of the KAS, a delegation of Judges from the Supreme Administrative Court visited Germany from 8-14 November 2009 for a study and dialogue programme on the development of administrative juristiction. During the programme the delegation met with the president of Federal Administrative Court, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Justice as well as with Members of the Bundestag. The Judges visited also the German University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer.
KPI Congress XI “Conflict, Legitimacy and Government Reform: Equitable Allocation of Resource in Thai Society”
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn presided over opening of the 11th academic congress of King Prajadhipok’s Institute(KPI) in cooperation with KAS “Conflict, Legitimacy and Government Reform: Equitable Allocation of Resource in Thai Society”, 5-7 November 2009, United Nations Conference Centre. At this event, Dr.Dieter W. Benecke illustrated the principle and framework of the Social and Ecological Market Economy (SEME) model as a tool to achieve sustainable government reform.
Workshop for National Internal Security Act
On 15 October 2009, KAS held the Workshop on the new Internal Security Act (ISA) and its effect on Southern border provinces. Intentionally, Thai Government has announced ISA in the selected provinces in southern area to replace the repealed martial law. Government representatives, human rights experts and Southern civil society organizations were in this activity.
Senators Meet People at Pattani
KAS with the collaboration of SOS invited 27 senators from various provinces to fly to Pattani and meet representatives of local people from 3 border provinces. This event is the first time that provided a opportunity to senators to have directly meet local people and share their opinion that hopefully will lead the solution of ongoing conflicts in southern border provinces.
German Elections 2009
Upon the invitation of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of the Representatives, Dr. Canan Atilgan, KAS-Representative to Thailand has briefed the committee members on the results of the German Elections. The MPs were particularly interested in the election campaign, the election system as well as the priorities of a CDU/CSU-FDP Coalition government. The committee has been informed also about KAS projects in Thailand, and asserted great interest in political dialogue.
Opening Ceremony of the Regional Parliamentary Centre in Songkla
The Secretariat of the National Assembly (SNA) held an opening ceremony of the Regional Parliamentary Centre (RPC) in Songkla on 28th-29th September 2009. The center will offer seminars on parliamentary democracy and provide information material on legislative procedures. In addition, it will serve as a public address for requests and petitions. During the opening ceremony, SNA has also launched new website for regional parliamentary centre: www.sna-dem.com
An Open Expert Forum "Thai State in the Next Decade"
“Thai State in the Next Decade”, an open expert forum on the future analysis of Thailand, was co-organized by Institute of Public Policy Studies(IPPS) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung on 24th September 2009, Bangkok. Through perspectives of renowned experts, the event succeeded in achieving its purpose in analyzing the shifting facet of Thai state due to rapid changes in social and economic environment as well as providing comprehensive strategy for the better future of the Thai society.
