The KAS-partner, Muslim Attorney Centre (MAC), was honourably granted the NGO Award 2011 from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Resource Alliance and Kenan Institute Asia. MAC had established from a group of Muslim attorneys in 2005 in order to provide legal counsel for vulnerable and marginalised persons in four deep-south provinces of Thailand. KAS Thailand and MAC have already worked together for some time. Since the beginning of this year KAS has started an EU co-funded project “Improvement of Access to Justice for Civillians in the Deep-South Provinces of Thailand” together with MAC and Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCF). The objective of this project is to reprocess the juridical problems in the deep-south of Thailand where special laws have been in force since 2005. In doing so, specific activities are carried out to legally support the indigent defendants and their families whose human rights are being violated. A pilot project of training the new generation of volunteer attorney has also been incorporated into the structure of the project. Ultimately, the project aims to realise a sustainable judicial reform process through seminars, workshops and constant dialogues with policy makers and security service personnel.
We wholeheartedly congratulate our partner on this honour which is a deserved esteem of MAC’s work in an adverse environment.
