Freedom, justice and solidarity are the basic principles underlying the work of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The KAS is a political foundation, closely associated with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). As co-founder of the CDU and the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) united Christian-social, conservative and liberal traditions. His name is synonymous with the democratic reconstruction of Germany, the firm alignment of foreign policy with the trans-Atlantic community of values, the vision of a unified Europe and an orientation towards the social market economy. His intellectual heritage continues to serve both as our aim as well as our obligation today.
In our European and international cooperation efforts we work for people to be able to live self-determined lives in freedom and dignity. We make a contribution underpinned by values to helping Germany meet its growing responsibilities throughout the world.
We encourage people to lend a hand in shaping the future along these lines. With more than 70 offices abroad and projects in over 120 countries, we make a unique contribution to the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and a social market economy. To foster peace and freedom we encourage a continuous dialog at the national and international levels as well as the exchange between cultures and religions.
Human beings in their distinctive dignity and with their rights and responsibilities are at the heart of our work. We are guided by the conviction that human beings are the starting point in the effort to bring about social justice and democratic freedom while promoting sustainable economic activity. By bringing people together who embrace their responsibilities in society, we develop active networks in the political and economic spheres as well as in society itself. The guidance we provide on the basis of our political know-how and knowledge helps to shape the globalization process along more socially equitable, ecologically sustainable and economically efficient lines.
We cooperate with governmental institutions, political parties, civil society organizations and handpicked elites, building strong partnerships along the way. In particular we seek to intensify political cooperation in the area of development cooperation at the national and international levels on the foundations of our objectives and values. Together with our partners we make a contribution to the creation of an international order that enables every country to develop in freedom and under its own responsibility.
The field office in Prague supervises projects within the Czech Republic since mid-1991.
The focus of our field office lays on the development and maintenance of a free and democratic society as well as a social and ecological market economy, integrated in the European Common Market.
After having successfully acceded the EU in 2004 and the holding of the first election to the European Parliament in the Czech Republic, it is now necessary to promote the inner integration of the country within the European Union, in order to consolidate the country's position as an equal member of the community. It is thus essential for us to be actively engaged in intensifying the public debate about the EU to improve the Czech Republic's image of Europe and its propagation via the media and politics of the country. In this context, the bilateral relations between the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany, as partners in unified Europe, should be strengthened.
In order to stabilize the representative democracy and to enhance the people's interest in the political process, it will be the task of the KAS Prague to maintain and further deepen the sociopolitical dialogue as well as the cooperation with political parties and their educational establishments. In this context, it is vital to prevent anti-system groupings from getting public support and thus legitimation. Additionally, the foundation aims at strengthening the political parties of the centre in important areas and tries to motivate the young generation to get involved in the work of the political parties.
To foster the underrepresented discussion about values and ethics in economy, society and politics in the Czech Republic, the KAS, according to its Christian responsibility, publicly thematise the challenges of genetic research, biotechnology and societal values.
Due to the promotion of sophisticated media coverage, a stable party structure and a society interested in European integration and accumulation of values, the KAS field office in Prague essentially contributes to the shaping of public opinion in the Czech Republic regarding a mutual European future and shared European values.
The objectives of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung are mainly implemented through educational and consulting measures, which are realized either autonomous or in cooperation with partners. Seminars, conferences, lectures, discussions and publications are the primary instruments of our work.
The programs and projects are complemented by the allocation of scholarships, study and information programs in Germany and Brussels, research work and coverage about political occurrences and other topics.
Conceived as a project of societal education, the activities of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in the Czech Republic revolve around the above listed key topics. Target groups are leading representatives and decision-makers from the fields of politics, economy, science, media and society. In the frame of the program, the objective of the foundation is an open dialogue and the exchange of experience with respective representatives from Germany. Furthermore, the education and information projects of the foundation particularly focus on young and future decision-makers.
