Český Rozhlas: KAS-experts discuss new forms of governance

The participants of the conference ”New Forms of Governance in the World and in Europe in the Context of Globalization” are going to discuss and evaluate this event at Český Rozhlas’ talk-show Talks about Europe at 11th November at 19:30. This conference took place last Wednesday with the support of VŠE, CES and Konrád Adenauer Stiftung. Vaclav Klaus signs Lisbon Treaty - Completes Ratification in the Czech Republic

After the constitutional court confirmed the treaty's conformity with the Czech constitution in the morning, the president signed the European reform treaty surprisingly quick in the afternoon. Thus, all members of the EU have now ratified the treaty which will therefore become effective on the 1st of December. Read more about these developments in our current country report. more…

Constitutional Court: Lisbon Treaty in Conformity With Constitution

The Czech constitutional court today decided that the Lisbon Treaty is in conformity with the constitution. Thus, the judges also rejected the second complaint filed by the ODS-senators. As the EU also made a demanded concession to Vaclav Klaus at its summit last week, it is expected that the Czech president will sign the European reform treaty in the next days. First Czech-German Day at Brno

On October 15th the first Czech-German Day took place at the Masaryk University in Brno. In addition to an experts conference with high-ranked deputies from politics and economy, the students could inform themselves about the work of various organisations, taste culinary specialities from both countries and learn more about the relations between the Czech Republic and Germany in different seminars and presentations.

Lisbon-Debate: Czech Constitutional Court Rejects Complaint

On Tuesday, the Czech constitutional court rejected the complaint of the ODS-senators against the amendment to the laws connected to the Lisbon treaty. The senators objected against the fact that the parliament can consent to further transfer of powers to the EU by a simple majority rather than a constitutional majority. The court's decision about the second complaint of the senators is expected within the next four weeks.

Pope Benedikt XVI. in the Czech Republic

From the 26th until the 28th of September 2009, pope Benedikt XVI. visited the Czech Republic. In this context, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Prague supports the publication "Benedikt XVI.: intelektuál, myslitel a vědec", which comments on the pope's attitude towards current clerical topics.

Early Elections in October cancelled

The political turbulences in the Czech Republic yet experienced another twist after the dissolution of parliament earlier this year. "European manual" informs in the Czech TV about European issues

In cooperation with the organisation Ano pro Evropu and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung the Czech TV produces the series "Manual Europe". Experts from politics, economy and science comment on issues like the Euro, the financial crisis and the Lisbon Treaty. Dr. Hubert Gehring, Head of the KAS Prag, was also interviewed. Essay competition for pupils: "What does the year 1989 mean to me?"

Freedom, Civil rights and Democracy are no matter of course. 20 years after the 'Velvet Revolution' many people sometimes seem to have forgotton, what Communism and dictatorship mean. Especially the young generation has to keep these fundamental events in mind. In cooperation with the IIPS of Masaryk University Brno, the CEVRO Institute and PANT the KAS Prag encourages pupils to send in their essays about the subject "1989 and the way to freedom".
