Why do we support regional journalism?

The representation of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in the Czech Republic seeks to foster the consolidation of democracy and pluralism in the long-run. Therefore, we acknowledge the general contribution of journalism to the accomplishment of these aims and support the work of journalists. Our focus lies on regional journalists, who face – in comparison to their colleagues working for nation-wide media – deficient time, material and financial conditions.

Since 2002 we announce in cooperation with our partners the Regional Journalism Award, which is supposed to single out and evaluate regional journalism. The proclamation of the upcoming Regional Journalism Award is taking place in spring 2011.

The Czech Regional Journalism Awards in Brno 2011

In 2011 the award was awarded for the ninth time. Every year the public interest in the Regional Journalism Award has been growing. In 2011 a record number of 94 contributions applied for the competition. This year’s topic has been „profile“. The winners were announced in Brno the 11th of November 2011. Mr. Radek Gális of the Českobudějovický deník won the award in the category “newspapers” and Mrs. Hana Soukupová of the Czech radio České Budějovice won the award in the category “broadcasting”. The announcement of the winners and the round table discussion on the „Role of the media in the disclosure of corruption“ were attended by more than 80 regional journalists. The following day several workshops on „how to render regional newspapers more attractive“ and „how to write an interesting profile“ took place. These were lead by the reporters of the newspaper Respect.
