Data privacy in the Czech Republic as well as in other member states of the European Union has been put in a new setting. Searching for information on the internet or buying goods online, we always leave a digital footprint. Personal data of users are one of the most powerful sources in 21st century. Thanks to a homogeneous European digital market transparent rules for users and entrepreneur s in Europe are going to be introduced. Thus, data privacy for each user will increase. Currently, these new rules are prepared to be introduced within the borders of the Czech nation state.

Under the patronage of Pavel Bělobrádek, deputy Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, and in cooperation with the Institute for digital economy, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation initiated a discussion on the protection of personal data between experts sent by either state institutions or the private sector on 24th February 2016. The discussion focused especially on the general approach of data protection regulation, voted and adopted at the end of the year 2015 on European level, being part of the developing digital domestic market in the EU. Within the next two years, each member state has to adapt the European directive into national legislation.

The members of the discussion have been especially interested in strict rules for the acceptance of editing data, in creating an Escape-provision and in providing the right to delete data. In addition to that, the restriction of data protection, in particular the protection of intentionally and unintentionally actions and a standardized process of protection and creating of reports on data breach were important subjects. Furthermore, the consequences on the general judgment on data privacy and the appointment of a data protection officer as well as the transmission of data abroad were relevant.

The digital domestic market offers new opportunities for the growth and development of the Czech economy. Therefore, it is important to make clear and transparent rules. Especially in the digital sphere, Czech Republic holds a high potential as shown by the various successes of Czech firms and start-ups.
