Young Union of Germany protests against political justice in Ukraine

Members of the Young Union of Germany ("Junge Union Deutschlands") and its federal chairman Philip Missfelder MP protested against political justice, arbitrariness and authoritarian rule in Ukraine in front of the Ukrainian embassy in Berlin. They called for an end to prosecution of the opposition and for the release of former Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko. In cooperation with KAS, "Junge Union Deutschlands" has been supporting democratic youth organisations in Ukraine for a long time.

Interactive Seminar Sequence

Clear values and political ideologies are important to solve social problems successfully

More than 70 participants of the Higher School of Politics attended a seminar about core values and political ideologies in February 2012. Discussions, working groups and the simulation of a parliamentary debate helped the future politicians to extend their knowledge about this topic. Besides getting acquainted with political ideas of Plato, Locke and Kant, part of the seminar programme was also the comparison of economic and social policies from the perspective of modern political ideologies.

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement text processing is almost complete. Under favorable circumstances, in the span of this year, the Agreement could become a signpost for socially important reforms, ensuring the irreversibility of Ukraine's European integration, confirming the final choice in favor of the European model of social and economic development. Retrospective 2011

The year 2011 was once again a very eventful year for the KAS office in Ukraine. One important highlight was the visit of EPP President Wilfried Martens, who came to visit Kiev in September. Additionally, the successful trinational dialogue journey "Europe in a Suitcase" as well as the seminar sequences "Remembering for the Future" and "Higher School of Politics" were continued. Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources

What is the greenhouse effect and why may greenhouse gases harm our climate? Which technical innovations have been developed to save energy and make use of renewable energy sources? And to what extent is everyone willing to change own behavioural patterns in order to protect the environment and climate? These questions were on the agenda of the last seminar of the Higher School of Politics 2011. One of the highlights was the simulation of a parliamentary debate about climate policy.

International Conference

Security in the Black Sea Region: Energy, Environment and Economy

International experts and decision makers from Black Sea neighbouring countries as well as from the EU and the USA came to Sevastopol on November 29, 2011 to discuss a comprehensive notion of security in the Black Sea region, including economic, ecological and energy-related questions. The deepening of regional cooperation among the Black Sea countries was named as an important requirement to counter the challenges of the future.

International Dialogue

"Europe in a Suitcase" in Dnipropetrovsk, Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhia

Since 2008 KAS organises the dialogue journey “Europe in a Suitcase” in cooperation with Polish, Ukrainian and German partner institutions. From October 27-29, 2011, Experts on European Policy of all three countries travelled to Dnipropetrovsk, Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhia and held debates with representatives of the local civil society about European values and Ukraine’s perspectives of rapprochement to the EU.

Hans-Gert Pöttering critisizes Tymoshenko's sentence

Hans-Gert Pöttering, the member of European Parliament, sharply criticized recent decision of the court in the case of ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. He stated: “Because of this verdict, which can’t be justified, Ukraine is even more moving away from European Union. Because of the political character of the sentence, the Association agreement, can not be signed. An important item of the agreement is the creation of free trade zone between EU and Ukraine”.

Vitaliy Klitchko visits Thuringia

Box champion Vitaliy Klitchko together with the Ukrainian delegation visited Thuringia. The visit was organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. In the framework of his two-day stay, Klitchko, as a leader of UDAR Party discussed the local policy and made a speech for “Junge Union” organization, from Thuringia. In the presence of prime-minister Christine Lieberknecht he called for action for the sake of strong Europe.
