Dialogue Tour 2010

Fundamental values

In a workshop organised by the KAS 25 young politicians from the youth organisation Batkyvshtshyna Moloda looked for value-centered orientation in order to reshape Ukrainian politics. The participants remarked that a change of values is essential for solving many of the social and political problems in Ukraine. They also developed ideas on how to promote a change of values in their own surroundings.

Interested in Europe? The project “Europe in a suitcase” for you!

KAS Ukraine, the Robert Bosch Foundation, the European Academy Berlin and the Polish Robert Schuman Foundation organize an events series named “Europe in a suitcase“. The project is supposed to intensify the discussion about Europe in the Ukrainian regions. The aim in 2010 is to elate committed young Ukrainians for the dialogue. Thus we are looking for young people aged 20-30 who want to participate together with Polish and German partners in discussions about Europe.

Essay contest

Public health

On January 25 the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Klitschko Brothers Foundation announced the winners of the nationwide essay contest on the topic “Public health”. Fifty competitors were invited to attend a seminar where their ideas will be developed into concrete projects.

Ukrainian presidential elections

Battle between Yanukovich and Tymoshenko

Opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoschenko prevailed in the first round of the Ukrainian presidential elections on January 17, and they will compete with each other in the runoff election on February 7. According to 90 percent of the votes counted so far Yanukovych reached more than 35% of the votes, Tymoschenko reached about 25%, followed by Serhij Tihipko with 13% and Arsenij Yatsenyuk with 7%. Before the presidential elections

Tense quiet before the first round of the elections

A few days before the first round of the Ukrainian presidential elections one can experience a tense quiet in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The positions of the most favoured candidates for president differ mostly in style not in their contents. There should be no surprises in the first round on January 17; thus Viktor Yanukovych and Yulia Tymoshenko are supposed to compete against each other in the second round on February 7.

Presidential elections

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) publishes the Electoral Guide Ukraine 2010

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Ukraine publishes the Electoral Guide Ukraine 2010. In this publication one can find all relevant information with regard to the Ukrainian presidential elections in January and February 2010. It provides both a detailed description of the Ukrainian electoral law and eventual problems and manipulations as well as a presentation of the presidential candidates and their political programmes.

Remembering for he future

From December 10-12 the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Kiev in cooperation with the Institute for Political Education organized another seminar on the topic of coming to terms with the past in Luzk. The German politician and publicist, Vera Lengsfeld, the former dissident Myroslaw Marynowytsh and the professor for history at the National Taras Shevchenko University, Wolodymyr Sergijtshuk were – among others – referees at the seminar. Special attention was paid to the issue of OUN/UPA.

Change in leadership

Hans-Gert Pöttering is the new chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS)

The former president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, was elected new chairman of the foundation by the general meeting of the KAS. Simultaneously, the outgoing chairman and former prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and of Thuringia, Bernhard Vogel, was elected honorary chairman of the foundation. The change in leadership will take place on January 1, 2010.

Panel discussions in Chmelnyzkyj

Understanding the European Integration

On November 30 the KAS Ukraine organized together with IEAC two panel discussions in the town council of Chmelnyzkyj and at the University of Chmelnyzkyj. The relevant issues in both discussions were the euro-atlantic integration of the Ukraine and the perspectives of European Integration with emphasis on the Eastern Partnership. The Rumanian ambassador presented in his statement the development of the relationships between Romania and NATO and Romania and the EU before the accession.
