Change in leadership

Hans-Gert Pöttering is the new chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS)

The former president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, was elected new chairman of the foundation by the general meeting of the KAS. Simultaneously, the outgoing chairman and former prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and of Thuringia, Bernhard Vogel, was elected honorary chairman of the foundation. The change in leadership will take place on January 1, 2010.

Panel discussions in Chmelnyzkyj

Understanding the European Integration

On November 30 the KAS Ukraine organized together with IEAC two panel discussions in the town council of Chmelnyzkyj and at the University of Chmelnyzkyj. The relevant issues in both discussions were the euro-atlantic integration of the Ukraine and the perspectives of European Integration with emphasis on the Eastern Partnership. The Rumanian ambassador presented in his statement the development of the relationships between Romania and NATO and Romania and the EU before the accession.

Remembering for he future

From November 19-21 the KKonrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Kiev organized another seminar “Remembering for the future” in cooperation with the Institute for Political Education in Simferopil (Crimea). The main topics of the discussions addressed the role of the media in the formation and the overcoming of stereotypes, the identity policy in the Ukraine and the historical development of Crimea with the focus on Crimean Tatars.

Difficult political situation in the Ukraine in the run-up to the presidential elections

On November 13 Christian Kremer, the deputy secretary-general of the EPP group, and Nico Lange held talks with some leading politicians of the Ukraine. The very difficult financial situation of the country, the cooperation with the IMF, the gas deliveries from Russia and the situation of the Ukrainian EPP associate parties were topics on the agenda. Another issue was the eventual participation of president Yushchenko and prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the forthcoming EPP congress.

Challenges for the European Union

Economic policy on the basis of the concept of social market economy and political decisions with regard to the climate change – Christian Kremer, the deputy secretary-general of the EPP regards these topics to be the current challenges for the European Union. On November 12, 2009 he discussed with the participants of the KAS Club topics regarding the European Union, the relations between the EU and the Ukraine and the forthcoming EPP summit on social market economy in Bonn in December 2009.

New handbook

EU in the pocket

On November 11 Professor Ivanov from the Academy for Ukrainian Press and Nico Lange presented the new EU handbook “EU in the pocket”. This new publication of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) summarizes intelligibly all facts regarding the European Union and its institutions after the Treaty of Lisbon, the relations between the EU and the Ukraine and some statistical data concerning economy and society. Within a very short time the first edition was nearly completely exhausted.

Panel discussion

20 years since the fall of the Berlin wall and five years since the Orange Revolution

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in Kiev organized together with the German Embassy in Kiev and the NGO BRAMA a panel discussion with the title “20 years since the fall of the Berlin wall and five years since the Orange Revolution – where are the values of the freedom movements today?”. With the participation of Günter Nooke and Myroslav Marynovitsh among others, his discussion took place on November 3, 2009 in Lviv.

Remembering for the future

From October 30 till November 1 the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) organized in cooperation with the Institute for Political Education the first seminar this year of the series of seminars named “Remembering for the future” in Dnipropetrovsk. The participants were municipal deputies, history students and young politicians from Dnipropetrowsk, Smiferopol (Crimea) and Luzk (Galicia). Dr Uwe Lehmann-Brauns reported on coming to terms with the past regarding the Socialist Unity Party of Germany.

Essay contest

Public health

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Klitschko Brothers Foundation wrote out an essay contest which will take place within their common project “Public health”. The authors of the best essays will receive support to realize their ideas. The aim of the contest is to encourage young Ukrainians in developing their own ideas about what to do concretely in order to improve public health on the basis of fundamental values.

How can energy security be guaranteed in the Black Sea region?

On October 9, ambassador André Mernier, Secretary General of the Energy Charter, and Dr. Heinrich Kreft, Senior Foreign and Security Advisor to the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, discussed in Kyiv the energy and financial security of the Black Sea region. The key issues of their talk were Turkey’s role and Russia’s involvement in these sectors.
