How can energy security be guaranteed in the Black Sea region?

On October 9, ambassador André Mernier, Secretary General of the Energy Charter, and Dr. Heinrich Kreft, Senior Foreign and Security Advisor to the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, discussed in Kyiv the energy and financial security of the Black Sea region. The key issues of their talk were Turkey’s role and Russia’s involvement in these sectors.

International Symposium

Ukraine in the European Energy Community - European standards for the Ukrainian energy sector

Just a day after signing the protocol between the European Commission and Ukraine on joining the European Energy Community, KAS Ukraine and the International Center for Policy Studies in Kyiv organized an international symposium concerning the topic. Experts from the EU Commission, the Ukrainian government, business and civil society welcomed the gradual adaptation of the Ukrainian energy sector to EU standards.

Dialogue trip to the Donbass region

Europe in a Suitcase

With an intense panel discussion in Donetsk on October 8, experts from Germany, Poland and Ukraine started the dialogue trip "Europe in a Suitcase 2009" through the Donbass region. The lectors will hold meetings on European integration in Donetsk, Kramatorsk, Slaviansk and Mariupol. The project is organized by KAS Ukraine in association with the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Robert Schumann Foundation and the youth organization of the Party of Regions in Donetsk.

Public health – value orientations of young Ukrainians

On September 30 the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in the Ukraine and the Klitschko brothers presented their common project “Public health”. As part of the project young Ukrainians are supposed to develop their own ideas about what to do concretely in order to improve public health. The authors of the best essays will be invited to a seminar and will get the possibility to realize their projects in their regions with the help of the KAS and the Klitschko Brothers Foundation.

Wellmann, Member of the German Bundestag, talks with Ukrainian politicians

From October 1-2, Karl-Georg Wellmann, Member of the German Bundestag, and Nico Lange held talks with Ukrainian politicians, such as Wolodymyr Ohrysko (National Security and Defence Council), Iryna Akimowa (Party of Regions), and the ambassador Heimsoeth, the representative of the German Embassy in Kiev. The dialogue focused on the forthcoming presidential elections, the economic situation of the Ukraine and the relations between Russia and the Ukraine.

Study visit

Ukrainian election observers in Germany

From September 20-27 election observers from Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America followed the invitation of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and experienced the final phase of the parliamentary elections in Germany. The group got to know the electoral campaigns in Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg and Berlin. The two Ukrainian participants attended the final rally of the Federal Chancellor Merkel and the electoral party in the party headquarters of the CDU.

Panel debate in Simferopol

Understanding of the European Integration in the Crimea

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation continue the series of panel debates about “EU Integration of the Ukraine” in the Crimea. Deputies, diplomats and experts discussed with local officials, scientists and students about the current developments of EU-Ukrainian relations. The focus was on the effects of the Ukrainian approach to the European Union on the political and economical situation in the Crimea.

Core Values for Lawful and Democratic Politics

Without value orientation the goal of political and civil efforts is unclear and their success not measurable. Enhancing democracy thanks to ideologically-based parties, the generational change or by way of European integration – on September 10-11, Ukrainian and German civil experts and politicians discussed current challenges in Ukrainian politics. Ministers Onischuk and Pavlenko contributed the judicial and youth political perspectives on a successful development of the country.

Encounter Seminar at the Ukrainian-Polish Border

European Neighbours' Day – true to this motto the Polish-Ukrainian Festival, taking place between August 29th and 30th, attracted numerous guests, experts and politicians to the border region in order to discuss cross-border projects, to present the new EU-concept “Eastern Partnership”, to unite in an ecumenical prayer and to celebrate together. Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung supported a forum on the issues of EU-Ukraine politics and interpersonal relations.
