Tackling the environment and media
On 24th of May the KAS office in Vietnam organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Journalism and Communication of the National University Hanoi a seminar on “Environmental journalism in Vietnam: latest developments, players and topics”. Environment and media are crucial parts of the KAS wider support to sustainable development in Vietnam. The KAS contributes to the professionalization of journalism in Vietnam. The seminar focused among others on the general role of the media in Vietnam.
Fifth Meeting of the Central Committee of the CPV completed
On 16th of May 2012 the fifth meeting of the Central Committee of the CPV was completed. The focus was on the amendment of the land law and the fight against corruption. It was decided to establish a Central Steering Committee on the Fight against Corruption and to re-establish the Committee of Internal Affairs of the Central Committee. The KAS supports the reform of the legislative and administrative body in Vietnam in line with democratic and rule-of-law principles.

Restructuring Public Investment and State Owned Enterprises
Around 130 participants from Government Institutions, National Assembly, Banks, Economic Institutes, Media, Public and Private Enterprises discussed the state of Vietnam's economy and its pressing problems in Hanoi. The conference aimed at a realistic roadmap for restructuring Vietnam's growth model including reforms of budget and bank systems, public investment, decentralisation mechanisms and the state owned enterprises. The conference is part of a series on economic renovation models.
World Press Freedom Day
Around 20.000 Journalists are registered in the Vietnamese Journalist Association these days. 600 newspapers and close to 70 broadcast stations belong to the state media. Four media faculties offer education and training to ongoing journalists countrywide. KAS supports the professional trainings with scholarships and seminars through cooperation with Universities and the Association. It is our mutual objective to encourage the media's social responsibility towards the Vietnamese society.

European economic restructuring models for the further stabilization of Vietnam’s economy
In light of the global economic and financial crisis the Vietnamese government has adopted a series of measures to restructure its economy. Throughout the conference „Economic Restructuring in the context of public debt and economic recession: Sharing experiences between Europe and Vietnam“(25.-26. April) international and national scholars and policymakers discussed various models for budget consolidation and economic structural reform.

NA Standing Committee discusses comprehensive economic restructure plan
On 19.05. representatives of the NA debated a comprehensive economic restructure plan for the time period 2011-2020. At the centre of discussion stood the restructuring of the financial markets, public investment and enterprises, with special focus on State-owned bodies. In this context the KAS office Vietnam and the VASS will organize from 25.-26.05 the seminar "Economic restructuring in the context of public debt and economic recession: sharing experiences between Europe & Vietnam".
Social market economy
The concept of market economy is increasingly seen as beneficial in Vietnam
According to the recent study „Changing Attitudes toward Market and State 2011 (CAMS 2011) “, commissioned by the World Bank and the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the majority of the population in Vietnams prefers a market economy over a state led economy. Within its mandate the KAS office in Hanoi organizes and implements projects which contribute the introduction of social protection systems as part of the social market economy. Rule-of-Law Dialogue
Continuing the bilateral cooperation in the area of law and justice for 2012 to 2014
On 3rd of April Dr. Birgit Grundmann, Secretary of State for Justice in Germany and Mrs. Nguyen Thuy Hien, Vice-Minister of Justice of Vietnam signed a joint declaration for cooperation between the Ministries of Justice of Vietnam and Germany regarding the continuation of the bilateral rule-of-law dialogue for 2012-2014. KAS continues to support the development of a judicial system based on rule of law and democratic principles as well as the introduction of a constitutional body in Vietnam.
Amending the Constitution of Vietnam
Opening of the sixth session of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee in Hanoi
On 19.03. the sixth session of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee, which will last nine days, commenced. During the first two days the Standing Committee discussed the summary report provided by the Vietnamese government regarding the implementation of the 1992 Constitution. The Constitution of 1992 is subject to major amendments until the end of 2013. The KAS supports the Vietnamese Executive, Judiciary and Legislative within among others the context of amending the constitution.

Publication of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation: "Ein Jahr nach Fukushima-Internationale Stimmungsbilder"
The KAS published on 15.02.2012 a publication. The publication contains reports from KAS offices worldwide that give insight into how the respective countries deal with the nuclear incident in the Fukushima Daiichi plant that followed a tremendous earthquake and tsunami in Japan on 11.02.2011. Within the publication the KAS office in Vietnam has produced a report on Vietnam and its energy strategy.
