Siam Cement Group: Dream for a better future

21/08/14 – How can economics students contribute to a better future? The answer of Siam Cement Group (SCG) was easy and clear: join and work for them. SCG has a long tradition and is one of the biggest companies in the ASEAN region. During this visit, the students learnt how SCG seeks to influence a positive development of society. The discussion with SCG staff indicated that a further integration of the ASEAN is inevitable for the future of both Thailand and Vietnam.

Thomson Reuters: Transparency as the key to success

20/08/14 – The group was warmly welcomed by Thomson Reuters, the biggest independent and one of the most influential news agencies worldwide. Simon Webb (Bureau Chief), Sharon Toh (Country Manager Indochina) and Rungkan Pakaprut (Media Manager) shared their experiences and the famous principles of Thomson Reuters. In the following, the group discussed lively with the experts on transparency, consistency and ethical principles in journalism and how to adhere them in reality.

Study tour to Bankok - Summer School

KAS-FTU Summer School: Study tour to Bangkok

After completion of the course in Vietnam, the 20 students and representatives from the cooperation partner Foreign Trade University will participate in a study tour to Bangkok with KAS. From 20 to 23 August, the group will visit both media agencies and ASEAN focused companies including Thomson Reuters, The Nation, Nation University, Siam Cement Group, Berli Jucker and PTT. The study tour aims to deepen the journalistic skills of students and to promote the understanding among ASEAN nations.

KAS-FTU Summer School: Journalism as a career option for economics students

From 28 July to 08 August 2014, twenty selected students from Foreign Trade University have got intensive training in economics, journalism and public speaking. The discussions between journalists and students showed that economics students are hardly aware of the opportunity journalism. After the training, each student completed an economic newspaper article and two public presentations. With the summer school, the KAS in Vietnam continues the efforts to improve economic journalism in Vietnam.

Training seminar on legal service organized by Ministry of Justice in cooperation with KAS

Legal service as an important driver of legal development in Vietnam

In a workshop organized by the Ministry of Justice in cooperation with KAS, legal officials from Northern provinces improved their professional skills on legal service. The workshop did not only provide unique training for the officials, it also created a platform to exchange experiences in the implementation of the Government Decree on legal service. The workshop contributes to a more effective implementation of the decree and therefore strengthens the legal development in Vietnam.

Rising awareness of legal reporting regarding media activities

A public understanding of the complexity of legal issues is supposed to be ensured in a long term way in Vietnam. The structure and function of the Vietnamese legal system was illustrated and discussed in a workshop with the Faculty of Journalism and Communication (VNU). The main goal of these efforts is to raise awareness among journalists and media representatives concerning legal reporting. Reports need to be researched in a correct way and on the basis of knowledge about legal issues.

Intensified Trade Relations: EU and Vietnam move closer together

The negotiations about a Free-Trade-Agreement between the EU and Vietnam are about to be concluded. At the 2014 VN-EU Business Forum in Ho Chi Minh City experts of the EU Delegation to Vietnam and the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry discussed the opportunities and challenges for the business community. Everyone agreed on the great benefits of the FTA and forced decision-makers to come to a conclusion as soon as possible.

Vietnam’s law on enterprises and investments needs improvement

Vietnam faces the need of amending its laws on enterprises and investment. In the context of a seminar - organized in cooperation with the Institute of State and Law – Public Law Professor Dr. Jörg Menzel provided an overview of the German legislation in the field of enterprise and investment laws. He particularly addressed Germany’s international trade agreements and discussed with the attending economists and lawyers the role of foreign investors in Germany.

Seminar Urban Government Model

Increasing urbanization demands efficient urban planning approaches

Climate change and increasing urbanization face Vietnamese cities with complex challenges. In cooperation with the Association of Cities of Vietnam (ACVN), theoretical and practical issues of urban planning management were debated in a seminar. The German expert PD Dr. Jörg Menzel presented the German urban government model, which lead to an intense exchange of experiences in overcoming the challenges of the development of Vietnamese cities.
