International Law Conference on the rights of indigenous people and environmental protection & A Moot Court

The KAS Rule of Law Programme and the University of Cebu organised an International Law Conference and a Moot Court Competition on the rights of indigenous people and environmental protection in Cebu, Philippines from September 13 to 16, 2018.

The event commenced with the Competition, which dealed with an environmental law question with a specific focus on the issues of land grabbing and rights of indigenous people. Law students from around the country participated in the Competition and eminent members of the Filipino judiciary were invited to attend the Competition as well. The Competition was followed by the two day Conference, wherein speakers from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, The Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan presented their views on the domestic legislative framework relating to traditional land uses and evaluated critically the current policy and legal framework dealing with traditions and cultures of indigenous people to address any gaps in policy.
