Romania MPs Sack Indebted Public Broadcaster's Managers

Romania’s parliament sacked the management of the country’s public broadcaster on Wednesday after finding its 2016 report unsatisfactory, citing poor management and the increased debts of the institution.

Romanian public television has faced financial troubles for the past decade at least and after reporting debts worth 145 million euros on December 31, 2016, its market share and investments dropped, the report submitted to parliament said.

The European Broadcasting Union suspended Romania’s broadcaster in April 2016, barring access to all EBU member services, citing repeated non-payment of debts going back to 2007 and the threat of insolvency.

After Wednesday’s vote, Romanian MPs are set to appoint an interim management for the next six months.
