Dialogue for Kurdish and Shia decision-makers in Iraq

KAS and MERI create multi-ethnic platform in Najaf

The Kurdish referendum for independence of September 2017 increased tensions between the Kurdish and Shiite populations of Iraq. As peace in Iraq depends on the ability of the country’s different social groups to cooperate, the KAS Syria/Iraq Office and the Middle East Research Institute (MERI) organized a two-day exchange between political and religious leaders of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and the Shiite religious center of Najaf. On February 28 and March 01, 2018, a Kurdish delegation travelled to Najaf to establish a dialogue to prevent future conflict.

Security Amidst Dissolution

Conference on the security situation in the Middle East

On 25th and 26th of May 2018, KAS and Maison du Futur - in cooperation with the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, the UQAM Center and the Municipality of Bikfaya - organized their annual conference on “Security amidst Dissolution” in Bikfaya. The conference offered a platform to discuss the security situation in the wider Middle Eastern region to various renowned experts from various countries and more than 200 guests.

Navigating the Complex Response to Extremism

Dialogue program on counter-terrorism in West Africa

For such a complex problem as violent extremism, there is no simple solution. This became clear during a three day exchange between West African terrorist experts, representatives from the UN and other relevant think thanks in New York. It takes comprehensive responses, starting at very different levels of state and society, to tackle this problem. The experts also agreed that exclusively relying on military security approaches to terrorism does not provide long-term solutions.
